And, thanks to our employees, in 2023, we were named one of Chicago’s Top Workplaces by the Chicago Tribune for the fourth time!This position is responsible for the following: preparation of US business personal property tax returns, Rail Canada car tax returns, Canadian Sales tax returns (GATX Corporation, Rail Canada and GATX Rail Locomotive), US unemployment returns, and payments and potential refunds. Resolution of payroll, personal property audits, appeals, and protests: review of property and payroll tax accruals: the identification of potential tax savings opportunities and other projects as assigned. This position is also responsible for research and analysis in the areas of property, payroll, Canadian sales tax, and unclaimed property as well as the more challenging projects as they arise.This is a REMOTE role. However, you will be required to be in person at the Chicago corporate office for the weeks of quarter & year end. The expenses related to your travel will not be reimbursed by GATX.Responsibilities:

Perform and analyze the following activities:All U.S. unemployment tax returns for GATX Corporation and its subsidiaries, assuring accurate and timely compliance at minimum expense.Research and analyze changes to the applicable tax laws.Information is compiled from Peoplesoft, analyzed and reported on the tax return.Federal and state unemployment insurance.Interface with payroll to determine amounts for G/L accounts.Interface with treasury to make on-line payments.Payroll tax accruals analysis.Personal property tax returns and payments for GATX Corporation and subsidiaries:Analyze and prepare personal property tax returns for GATX Corporation and GATX Rail Locomotive.Review and provide information to outside consultants for GATX Corporation and its subsidiaries real property.Review assessments and prepare required payments.Provide information to GATX Rail Locomotive for rebilling property taxes to customers.Respond to GATX Rail Locomotive customer requests for information.Prepare account analyses for real and personal property tax accounts.Compile and prepare Rail Canada and GATX de Mexico car tax returns and analyze assessments and tax bills.Plan for ways to minimize payroll, property taxes, identify tax saving opportunities; review state and local tax legislation. Perform tax research and prepare tax memoranda in connection with such planning.Represent GATX Corporation in payroll, property tax audits, appeals, and protests. Prepare tax schedules, memoranda, protests and other tax projects as assigned.Research audit position.Gather documentation.Assist Senior Manager with legal explanations of positions reported.Unclaimed Property tax payments:Prepare required payments.Converse with outside consultants regarding documentation.Review state websites for potential refund claims.Canadian Sales tax returns and payments:Prepare and file GATX Corporation, Rail Canada and Rail Locomotive Canadian sales tax returns.Manage both desk and full Canadian sales tax audits for respective companies.Qualifications:

Interaction:The tax accountant is responsible for the preparation of all U.S. payroll unemployment taxes for GATX Corp., GATX Rail Locomotive and Trifleet Leasing. This position is responsible for property, car tax, Canadian sales tax returns. This individual must stay current with and implement U.S. and Canadian tax law for compliance purposes. The individual must be aware of the subsidiaries business environment, capital asset structure, and the proper manner of presentation of both tangible and intangible property. They must also assure consistency and clarity of presentation in the tax returns. This individual must have effective communication skills to interact with the business units as well as independent auditors, assessors, contract appraisers, outside counsel and the governmental agencies of Canada. The individual must be capable of performing independent research on payroll, property and Canadian sale & use tax issues, developing positions and recommendations.Education and/or Experience Required:Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent education.0-2 years of property, payroll and Canadian sales/use tax experience a plus.Experience in the rail industry is a plus.The ability to negotiate effectively is essential.General experience Microsoft Office, SAP, PTMS, or similar products is also required.Managing multi-task workload with frequently changing priorities.Customer focus – win/win results oriented.Attention to details – following up with internal customers, due dates.Analytical skills – never taking an answer at face value without independent analysis.Communication.Planning and organizing.Other:Travel will be required including travel for education.
