Position Summary

The Major Gifts Officer will partner with Development leadershipand peers to help build a fundraising program to grow the cultureof philanthropy across the institution in support of Carnegie’sscientific community. This position will be based and will beregionally focused on the West Coast. The Major Gifts Officer willstrive to develop the pipeline of major, principal, and plannedgifts by engaging with Carnegie’s donors, prospects, and otherstakeholders to strengthen existing relationships, as well asexpand the institution’s portfolio of donors. Discovery work is asignificant component of the position, offering an opportunity toestablish and deepen relationships that benefit theinstitution.

Essential Functions

The qualified candidate must be able to perform the essentialfunctions of the position with or without reasonableaccommodation.

Contribute to the development of the major gifts pipeline byleveraging relationships with donors, supporters, scientists,staff, and others.

Execute thoughtful moves management and interactions thatdeepen relationships, increase giving, and move donors up thegiving ladder.

Move prospects through the donor continuum by identifying,cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding donors to successfullyclose gifts.

Participate in efforts to deepen individual donor engagement inCarnegie Science, including opportunities for donors to participatein prospect identification.

Identify, pursue, and develop relationships that lay thegroundwork for 5-, 6-, and 7-figure solicitations.

Increase donors at the leadership annual fund level of 5-6figures through membership in “philanthropy circles”.

Build relationships with donors and prospects via personalvisits, Zoom meetings, phone calls, ongoing written contact, andevents.

Collaborate with other development partners to understand thephilanthropic interests and priorities of constituents and helpthem realize their philanthropic potential as supporters ofCarnegie Science.

Participate in activities that help meet the goals andobjectives of the development team, including attendance atinstitution-wide meetings, departmental community lectures,scientific presentations given by department scientists, as well asat other engagements.

Build awareness of Carnegie Science to foster donors in thephilanthropic community.

Work with leadership and colleagues to craft appropriate andconsistent messaging regarding Carnegie Science’s fundraising.

Write proposals and other cultivation and stewardshipmaterials.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree

At least 3-5 years of experience in non-profit development,with a record of cultivating, soliciting gifts, and securing giftsof 5-figures and up.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience, or strong and genuine interest, in science ispreferred.

Understanding of, commitment to, and ability to articulate theCarnegie mission to engage donors.

Knowledge of how to build a major donor pipeline and implementbest practices of donor stewardship.

Ability to guide, manage, and support volunteers and otherstakeholders in the fundraising process.

Ability to design and implement effective cultivation,solicitation, and stewardship strategies for individualgiving.

Ability to build and maintain relationships with high-net-worthindividuals; must know how to build strong relationships throughdonor engagement.

Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and donor trackingsoftware (preferably Salesforce).

Ability to apply good judgment and handle confidentialmaterials and situations with sensitivity and discretion.

Comfort working in a fast-paced, flexible, collegial,goal-oriented and scientific environment.
