Berkeley Lab's Environment, Health & Safety Division seeks an

Electrical Compliance Engineer

(ECE) to ensure compliance with electrical codes and standards for equipment installations and modifications. As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), the ECE plays a crucial role in identifying and resolving design and construction errors within a multidisciplinary team.This position will support the ALS (https://www.als.lbl.gov), a world-class accelerator-based user facility that provides high intensity high energy photon beams for science. A 200-meter circumference electron accelerator generates photon packets that feed the more than 40 independent beamlines where more than 2000 scientists per year perform their experiments. The ALS has recently started a major accelerator upgrade project to rejuvenate the facility for many years to come.What You Will Do:Ensure compliance with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) policies, procedures, and standards in electrical and fire safety codes as the SME.Collaborate with Engineers of Record (EOR), Inspectors of Record (IOR), Construction Subcontractors, and Construction Managers to enhance electrical installation safety and quality.Foster cooperative relationships with Science and Operations Divisions to support LBNL’s mission.Review electrical drawings/specifications to verify compliance with codes and project specifications before accepting construction documents.Provide clarification and documentation to resolve design review and inspection comments effectively.Research and provide engineering direction on code compliance and suggest protective equivalencies.Implement process improvements to enhance the AHJ program’s effectiveness.Recommend enhancements to LBNL master electrical specifications and related procedures.Utilize software for collaborative design reviews, presentations, communications, and archival file management.What is Required:Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area OR equivalent professional experience/training and a minimum of 8 years of full-time experience in electrical design, technical plan reviews, or electrical inspection for fire or building code regulations OR 12 years of education/relevant work experience.Expertise in NFPA 70 & NFPA 70E (National Electric Code and Electrical Safety Standards).Ability to achieve and maintain an International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI)/ICC Commercial Electrical Inspector E2 certification (required within 6 months of date of hire).Comprehensive knowledge of industry standards, safety codes, design standards, and environmental regulations in electrical engineering.Experience in electrical systems design, plan review, and field evaluation for compliance with codes and standards.Familiarity with electrical construction methods and equipment selection for facilities.Proficiency in power system analysis, including short circuit, arc-flash calculations, voltage drop, power factor, and protective relay coordination.Ability to interpret and apply codes and standards in plan reviews and issue resolution.Strong technical, analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.Proficient in engineering software, document management, and project scheduling tools.Effective in written, oral, and interpersonal communication, including public speaking and presentations.Desired Qualifications:Registration as a Professional Electrical Engineer in the State of California.Valid driver's license.Notes:This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.The Electrical Compliance Engineer is expected to pay $156,000 - $185,000 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $134,496 - $226,944 annually for the job classification of H80.4.Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.This position may be subject to a background check. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule (post probation period) - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
