About the Opportunity
Northeastern University's Planning, Real Estate and Facilities (PREF) division is seeking a Campus Planner to join a talented team of planners, architects, and designers at a dynamic, top tier, urban research university.
The mission of PREF is to shape and care for Northeastern University's physical environment in support of learning and discovery. Under the direction of the Director of Campus Planning, the Campus Planner will facilitate campus-wide planning initiatives and space planning work for various campus users to improve and maximize the use of campus space in support of Northeastern's mission. Utilizing their background in campus planning and stakeholder engagements, the Campus Planner will evolve program needs into practical short- and long-term options, develop graphics to visualize these options and approaches, and assemble graphically clear presentation materials to provide decision support for senior university leadership. Working at a range of planning scales, from campus-wide approaches and capital renewal strategies to smaller project level planning, being able to easily pivot between each is critical. The Campus Planner will lead campus planning studies, either done in-house or through the management of external consultants and collaborate with other planners and staff in PREF to develop short- and long-term solutions to existing and anticipated space needs in Northeastern's expanding global campus network.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and
four to five
years professional experience in Architecture, Urban Planning, Space Planning, Urban Design, or a closely related field. A Master's degree may serve as a substitute for experience. Ability to solve space and site planning issues, understand urban planning context, collaborate as a team. Comfort to communicate in written, verbal, and graphic form. Comfort and ability to switch between competing tasks and priorities. Experience and comfort in working in a fast-paced environment and managing projects with internal and external stakeholders. Experience and comfort using AutoCAD, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe Creative Suite. Ability, willingness, and comfort working with people from various backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, linguistic styles, and socio-economic status. Ability, willingness, or experience managing interns or co-op students. Strong organizational and project management skills are a plus. Experience in retail and residential dining, mail, or business service planning is a plus. Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities Programmatic Design and Planning (30%) Conceptualize space program needs into practical short- and long-term space planning options. Collaborate with other members of the Campus Planning & Design team who are solving similar space needs to devise creative solutions to utilize space more efficiently. Be aware of and track industry trends across and understand how these trends
affect
Northeastern's space and design planning processes. Be aware of and track sustainability trends and implications for future planning and design projects. Client Service (25%) Provide planning support and technical expertise to university client groups and campus administration. Analyze individual capital project proposals in the context of the greater university and communicate the element as a part of a whole. Process and Study Management (20%) Manage planning studies and develop space program options and approaches to solve specific space needs and goals of the University. Liaise with and manage external consultants to work on various Northeastern planning efforts. Manage space and campus planning studies in Boston and select global locations. Internal and External Communications (15%) Assemble graphically clear and compelling presentations and other communication materials that distill planning process, scenarios and recommendations. Conduct presentations to PREF leadership, NU community, external partners and organizations, government agencies, and elected officials. Develop and present scenarios to help inform decisions regarding campus space use.
