General Description:
Directs and manages all aspects of care relating to the support and environmental elements of Sterile Processing and Perioperative Central Sterile Supply Department to include staff and performance improvement, cost controls, budget preparation, lean process improvement, manages supply chain for Perioperative Services both at OUH and OUH Surgery Center. Must network with suppliers, distributors, service providers and contractors the facilities use to source materials, components, supplies and services. Manages employees responsible for preparing, storing and distributing supplies as needed for patient care in the OR including case cart management. Ensures effective and timely procedural set-ups, transports, availability and proper functioning of equipment, environmental cleaning and sanitation. Maximizes cost effectiveness and utilizes best quality practice by adhering to standards, guidelines, benchmarks (internal and external) and resources for optimal delivery of care. Incorporates data and practices to continually improve care to enhance outcomes. Reports regularly to governing bodies.Essential Responsibilities:Develops and implements processes to ensure sterile instrumentation is available for procedures and returned instruments are in optimal condition.Oversight and calculation of monthly IUSS for OUH and OUH Surgery Center.Oversees inspection, repairs and maintenance of all instruments washers, steam sterilizers and equipment. Ensures instruments are well maintained and in proper working order.Monitors and maintains records of the quality assurance testing results for the sterilization cycles. Ensures compliance and consistency with sterilization principles, standards and techniques. Ensure staff are using proper procedures to validate sterile outcomes. Reports and derivations in results to immediate supervisor. Assesses training needs and develops educational material in collaboration with SPD Educator and Director of Perioperative Educator, inclusive of specific policies and procedures, for staff training as necessary.Establishes procedures and enforces compliance with infection control and safety standards. Monitors staff for proper attire and ensures that all personnel wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times. Ensures adherence to established standards for sterile processing.Maintains current and accurate records of all the instruments in inventory system (Impress).Responsible for inventory records of Central Supply Rooms, relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.Ensures materials and parts in the supply chain meet the minimum requirements for quality assurance standards.Interfaces directly with Perioperative Services at both OUH and OUH Surgery Center with regards to materials that have been requested to ascertain specifications and need.Maintains adequate supply levels for Perioperative Services both at OUH and Surgery Center.Devises policies and procedures in the areas of procurement and inventory control.Places purchase orders.Considers best price, quality, availability, and reliability when purchasing products.Manages department budget on all expenditures. Gathers pertinent data to develop projections. Authorizes expenditures within established limits. Tracks and monitors budget activity and analyzes variances.Recruits, screens, hires, trains and directly supervises all assigned subordinate staff. Evaluates employee performance and provides guidance and feedback. Assesses workload. Plans and schedules staff accordingly. Counsels, disciplines and/or terminates employees as required. Makes recommendations concerning departmental goals and objectives, including workforce planning and compensation. Reassesses or redefines priorities as appropriate in order to achieve performance objectives.Resolves daily operational problems and staff concerns in a timely manner.Develops and implements security related procedures throughout the department. Promotes and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior.Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.Maintains membership on facilities Infection Prevention committee.Directs the care, patient documentation, storage and high level disinfection processing of all endoscopes for Surgical Services according to manufacturers instruction for use.Minimum Qualifications:Education:
Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) required.Experience:
Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in management of a Sterile Processing Department that supports a large (annual case volume of 15,000 or greater) operating room environment.License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required:
Technician certification from either the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or from the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) required. Advanced certifications (CHL, CIS) preferred.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of maintenance and sterilization of medical supplies and equipment. Knowledge of applicable sanitation and hygiene standards. Knowledge of proper safety practices of steam and gas plasma sterilization. Knowledge of simple record keeping principles and practices. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Effective customer service skills. Able to read, spell and do simple math. Good computer skills. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Strong leadership and management skills.
