Position Details

An optometrist is a doctor of optometry, an OD. A health care professional who is licensed to provide primary eye care services. Optometrists examine and diagnose eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and retinal diseases; diagnose related systemic (body-wide) conditions such as hypertension and diabetes that may affect the eyes; examine, diagnose and treat visual conditions such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia; and prescribe glasses, contact lenses, low-vision rehabilitation and medications. Optometrists also perform minor surgical procedures such as the removal of foreign bodies.Interviews patients to obtain information such as symptoms, medical histories, and family histories.Performsand/orinterpretsdiagnostic testsas needed.Diagnose and design a plan of treatment for injuries and/or illness.May prescribeor administermedications.Prepares, maintains, and reviews records that includepatients'histories, examination findings, treatment plans, or outcomes.
