BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide advocacy to survivors of sexual violence and significant others who have not caused harm, during their encounters with legal and medical services. The advocate provides the survivor and their significant others with emotional support and accompaniment throughout the criminal justice proceedings and medical services they receive. The advocate ensures medical advocacy standby response.LOCATION:
HybridRESPONSIBILITIESAs a Medical Advocate:Provides standby call after-hour coverage for medical advocacy services, which include responding to clients’ needs within 60 minutes at the Emergency Room.Provides information and options regarding follow-up services including explanation of medical forensic exam and the evidence collection process, medical exam, crime victim’s compensation, and information regarding voucher for free follow-up healthcare.Accompany survivors throughout the medical process and provides follow-up contact within 48 hours of first contact.Provides advocacy services that are victim-centered and culturally competent in person to survivors and significant others who have not caused harm and contact with the emergency room or other medical personnel regarding medical issues related to the sexual assault.
As a Legal Advocate (Criminal and Civil Justice Advocacy):Provides information regarding survivor’s options including reporting to the police and state’s attorney offices.Provision of information regarding survivors’ rights, accompanying the survivor to meetings with police and state’s attorney, court appearances, going to court on behalf of the survivor, and filing for crime victim compensation.Explain the criminal justice process, court procedures, and emotionally prepare survivors for court requirements.Assist survivors in obtaining Protective orders, Title IX or campus proceedings, Victims’ Economic Security and Safety Act (VESSA), Safe Homes Act, and other civil court activities.Develop, maintain, and keep track of caseloads of civil and criminal justice advocacy clients, and external/internal referrals received from other programs or agencies.
Provide crisis intervention, information, referrals, and linkages to survivors of sexual violence through on-call, medical advocacy, and intake services.Maintain compliance with documentation standards as indicated by program, grant and organizational requirements.Develop and nurture partnerships with medical and criminal justice personnel and stay informed of changes to laws and policies impacting SA survivors.Participate in the delivery of the SA 42-hour training.Advocate at the institutional level on behalf of Latines through participation in advisory groups and other coalitions that focus on the issue of sexual assault.Other duties as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSBachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferredSexual Assault 40-hr. trained preferredDemonstrate skills and abilities to advocate for and with survivors of diverse populations.SALARY$48,000 – $58,656TO APPLY : Please send resume and cover letter to gbvprograms@mujereslat.org.Mujeres Latinas en Acción is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
