This role is responsible for providing support to the director in relation to faculty and staff. This entails implementing an engaging, compelling, and contemporary vision of Ignatian Spirituality’s role in a Catholic-Jesuit university. With a spirit of joy and building community in the process, the associate director provides opportunities for spiritual and intellectual formation so that faculty and staff can cultivate their spiritual life individually and collectively, learn about Ignatian Spirituality and its connections to Jesuit Education, and promote a faith that does justice.

Duties and Responsibilities1. Provide spiritual formation opportunities through on-going spiritual direction and retreat ministry to individuals and groups, including the Spiritual Exercises. Direct and create new retreats that further this spiritual formation around the themes of social justice, race, Eco spirituality, and vocation, among others. Facilitate faith sharing groups, lunch reflection experiences, guided meditations, and opportunities to develop and deepen prayer practices.
2. Provide intellectual formation opportunities on Ignatian Spirituality, its connection to Jesuit Education and specific academic disciplines (business, healthcare, athletics etc.), discernment, and Catholic Social Teaching. Facilitate scripture studies and book discussions that lead to a greater appreciation of spiritual life and intentional living, and its connection to working at Marquette.
3. Supports the director in overseeing the operations of the Center. This includes event management, marketing, budgetary/financial support, logistics, and outreach to new constituency. Creating written, audiovisual, and electronic resources on spirituality for use by faculty and staff, Newsletters, and websites.
4. Actively participate in the life of the university through serving on committees, presence at major university events, and attend external events with benefactors and donors as directedRequired Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesMaster’s degree in Divinity, Theology, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, or equivalent degree along with demonstrated skills as a spiritual and retreat director
A minimum of 4 years of related experience.
Ability to direct the Spiritual Exercises
A deep understanding and appreciation of Ignatian Spirituality, as well as understanding the dynamics of spiritual growth and formation
Experience with discernment and vocation
Experience and understanding of Catholic, Jesuit Higher Education
Competence in addressing the spiritual needs of diverse communities, consistent with Marquette’s Statement on Human Dignity and Diversity.
Strong skills in group facilitation, public speaking, and written communication
Ability to participate as a collaborative member of a ministerial team and implement both individual and team goals effectively
Possess personal initiative, compassion and creativityPreferred Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesTerminal degree in Divinity, Theology, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, or equivalent degree
Experience working with religiously diverse populations as well as those with no affiliated religious tradition
Understanding of diverse Catholic/Christian spiritualties and a breadth of religious traditions
Experience in training and supervising spiritual and retreat directors.DepartmentDepartment
