Job Description:
Kansas City University is seeking a dynamic and experienced individual to join our team as the Director of Research for the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM). Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research, the Director of COM Research provides leadership for developing and enhancing medical school research strategies, processes and policies and provides guidance in operationalizing faculty and student research. The Director of COM Research will collaborate with the University departments including Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Population Health and Equity, Institutional Effectiveness and other programs and departments engaged in advancing the research mission at the University. The position will include faculty appointment with opportunities to engage in teaching and applicable service related activities.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
Recommends and implements the strategic goals for the research program and operations, implementing a research strategy that informs the college’s research programs and practices and advances equity and impact in alignment with the University’s mission.
Provides strong leadership to the research team, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment and encourages continuous learning and professional growth.
Collaborates with stakeholders to identify key research areas, prioritizes projects accordingly and integrates research insights into strategic decision-making processes.
Identifies opportunities for growth and expansion, and leads advancement as needed.
Assists in identifying granting agencies and specific grant mechanisms which align with faculty, student, and University research interests.
Collaborates with faculty members to promote a research-driven culture and foster interdisciplinary collaborations.
Facilitates and oversees the integration of student research initiatives into the school's research agenda, providing guidance and support to students and their mentors in diverse research projects.
Collaborates in gathering research productivity data, analyzes research results and oversees the production of high-quality research reports and presentations that effectively communicate findings and insights to internal and external partners.
Conducts and publishes high-quality research.
Participates in development and delivery of research/scholarship related training through the undergraduate medical curriculum.
Develops a plan and resources for training peer faculty in effective mentorship of students, study design, modes of scholarship, grant writing, and other topics to advance the research strategic plan.
Collaborates with faculty members to develop and implement faculty development opportunities.
Reviews and assists in the prioritization and distribution of established research resources including financial, lab support, core facilities, etc.
Identifies and assists in enhancing established partnerships and seeks to expand research partnership opportunities in support of COM students and faculty.
Qualifications:
A doctoral degree in a medical or health-related discipline (PhD, DO or MD preferred).
A minimum of five years of research experience with evidence of success in research endeavors including publication, presentation, grant writing and student mentorship.
Experience with a broad set of methods and approaches to research, including both quantitative and qualitative methods, database applications, study design, data analysis (including statistical) and grant processes.
Strong computer literacy skills, including computer programs for statistical analysis, word processing, spreadsheets, and general business and research applications.
Experience leveraging technology in research which may include the use of Artificial Intelligence.
Demonstration of a high level of motivation, capable of self-direction and able to work collaboratively in a team with the ability to communicate in a clear and coherent way.
Possess strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Demonstration of integrity, positive ethics and values reflective of the University’s values.
