ABOUT THE ROLE
Reporting to the Manager, Corporate Development, the Specialist performs timely, accurate, and comprehensive research and business analysis, as well as financial analysis, to support major growth initiatives being evaluated by the company. This position will be actively involved in leading the screening, analysis, and acquisition of mid to advanced stage renewable development projects as well as mergers and acquisitions (M&A) that will support the company's growth objectives. This role also provides financial modelling and analysis to support the Corporate Development group.
This role is primarily office based at our head office in Downtown Calgary.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
- Provide financial analysis and other analytical support on all M&A and mid to advanced stage development acquisition activities including the creation and maintenance of screening level and full financial models for the early-stage evaluation of potential projects
- Ensure all inputs to financial models have been agreed to and signed off by sponsoring project manager
- Deliver accurate analyses of corporate impacts of investment decisions for both TransAlta
- Preparation of presentation packages, bid packages, bid proposal letters, overviews, reports and presentations for projects
- Perform transaction support functions, such as data room management, Q&A coordination, and coordination of cross-functional due diligence efforts
- Perform ad hoc analysis, including the creation of financial models, analysis of business trends to support the growth of the business, and research to support corporate strategy development
- Analyze operating models for existing TransAlta assets and supporting decisions on outsourcing vs insourcing models
- Lead divestures of existing TransAlta assets and continuously evaluating creative structure to unlock value from TransAlta's portfolio
- Lead M&A transactions from inception through due-diligence, approvals, signing, and closing
- Support the hand-off process of transactions with the project integration teams
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
- 5 or more years' experience in a corporate strategy and or planning/analysis role
- Degree and/or professional designation in, business, finance, economics, or other applicable degree
- Previous M&A experience or investment banking experience is preferred
- CFA preferred, or working towards CFA
- Expert skills in Excel, PowerPoint and Word
- Strong financial background with an understanding of the principles of financial analysis, key financial metrics that generate value, mergers and acquisitions, and financial statement analysis
- Experience in financial spreadsheet modelling
- Background in power generation an asset
- Knowledge of TransAlta, its assets, processes and strategy are an asset
- Ability to handle multiple projects at various stages and to prioritize with the assistance of Manager
- Well-developed understanding of valuation techniques and financial metrics
- Ability to work independently and produce results within agreed upon deadlines
- Cross-functional communication skills
- Ability to develop strong working relationships with people at all organizational levels
- Highly motivated individual
- Willing to dedicate time necessary to deliver on tight deadlines
- Enjoys working on multiple assignments and thrives under pressure
