About the DepartmentThe Department of Forest Biomaterials has responsibilities for teaching, research and extension activities. It awards undergraduate degrees in Paper Science and Engineering, and Sustainable Materials and Technology; and distance Masters, MS, and PhD degrees in Forest Biomaterials. The Department of Forest Biomaterials at North Carolina State University is a full-service ecosystem advancing the future of biomaterials from educating future leaders to supporting industry and government research. Essential Job DutiesThe Hodges Wood Products Lab offers testing services for solid and engineered wood products, testing of laminates, kiln drying, evaluation of environmental effects on wood products, and evaluating product failure and production problems such as gluing and machining. The Wood Products Technical Researcher is responsible for sustaining and promoting the growth of Hodges Technical Services focusing on solid, biobased flooring coverings. This position will continue to build the technical expertise and capabilities for Hodges Wood Products. In addition, this position will develop communication products for industry groups by executing and managing assigned projects covering the areas of: technical research, testing standards, website updates, trade shows and conventions, training courses and other events. This person will serve as a liaison with University partners, industry partners, associations and companies to fulfill the projects and assigned duties. This position manages the testing program, which includes consulting with sponsors to establish projects; developing laboratory safety plans, and safe operating plans for the different testing systems; writing technical reports; collecting data and testing developing protocols to meet the needs of new research projects.

Primary Responsibilities:

Maintain a high level of safety training and safe operating procedures for the testing equipment.Research, develop and sustain new lab capabilities to serve industry needs.Maintain an income stream from external and internal sources sufficient to support the operations of the Service Center.Serve as an expert point person for all flooring coverings inquiries.Develop and interface with internal and external trade partners.Coordinate and implement testing services and communication products that support the needs of internal and external agents.Provide technical support for teaching and research faculty.Facilitate technical instruction of students and research personnel in materials properties testing.Implement demonstrations for teaching laboratories and workshops.Work with undergraduate and undergraduate and graduate students, supporting some laboratory activities and assisting them with class research.Help communicate the vision and message of The Hodges Technical Services.Actively support public outreach efforts by identifying opportunities for editorial coverage, award and recognitions, directory listings and other focused placements.Manage processes and protocols to ensure accurate dissemination of information to both internal and external audiences. Proof all material and coordinate revisions.Schedule, manage and attend industry-relevant meetings and seminars including the creation of support materials.Maintain a database of industry contacts with relevant information and the last point of contact.

Other ResponsibilitiesThis position will work with industrial partners and create the opportunities for technical service and research, implement the work without any direct supervision.

QualificationsMinimum Education and ExperiencePost-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professionaltraining and experience.

Other Required Qualifications

Must have a commitment to environmental health and safety compliance, especially those common wood products labs.Understanding and full compliance with NCSU, and federal rules on mechanical properties tests for wood and wood compositesSafe operation of wood machining and tooling and kiln drying.
