JOB TITLE:

Research Pilot

JOB PURPOSE:

To pilot the university aircraft for transportation or weather research purposes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Pilot airplanes for weather research or transportation (job requires flexible schedule).Follow Federal Aviation Administration rules and regulations.Comply with University Flight Facility Operations Manual.File flight plans assessing safety conditions.Assess weather conditions and other factors which affect safety and flight.Inspect, test, and adjust airplanes during test flights.Report maintenance requirements to authorized flight personnel for necessary mechanical adjustments and repairs.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist with budget and schedule preparation for the Flight Facility.Assist with aircraft mechanical adjustments and repairs.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate to be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in aviation; experience will be evaluated by type and complexity on a case-by-case basis.

Valid driver's license with a motor vehicle record (MVR) compliant with the University Vehicle Use Policy.

EXPERIENCE:

3,000 or more logged pilot hours;2,000 hours minimum as pilot-in-command of multi-engine, fixed-wing aircraft;400 hours minimum in fixed-wing turbine aircraft;

KNOWLEDGE SPECIFIC TO THE JOB:

Federal Aviation Administration rules and regulations.Weather and atmospheric conditions as they affect flight operations.Flight procedure and flight plans.Operation of fixed wing aircraft.Federal air regulations relative to pilots' privileges, restrictions, and obligations.Airport procedures.Techniques of loading an aircraft to achieve proper balance.Geography, topography, navigation, and weather conditions.Budget and schedule preparation.Mechanical adjustment and repairs to aircraft.

LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS, REGISTRATIONS, OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Airline Transport Pilot certificate (multi-engine land).First class FAA medical certificate within last twelve months.Special conditions of employment requiring passing regular medical examinations/tests exist for this classification. Please contact the Atmospheric Science Department for a copy of the current requirements.Candidates selected for an onsite interview will be required to pass a check ride in a university aircraft.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Fly aircraft at all times of day, all seasons and weather conditions, and flying at low altitudes and low air speeds.Operate aircraft solely by reference to flight instruments.Respond quickly in emergencies.Make judgments concerning flight safety based on weather, flight plans, and other information.Maintain records, prepare reports, and conduct correspondence related to the work.Communicate effectively with scientific crew and passengers.Operate an aircraft radio.Read maps and charts.Describe and communicate locations to ground units.Conduct pre-flight inspections.Operate technical equipment and test aircraft instrumentation.Recognize safety concerns.Use near and far visual acuity.Prepare budgets and schedules for Flight Facility.Make mechanical adjustments and repairs to aircraft.
