Senior Staff Engineering Manager, Database Platform

Position DescriptionOur Senior Staff Engineering Manager is an engineering leader who works with the engineering staff to innovate and build new engineering solutions, improve and enhance existing solutions as well as leverage engineering solutions to solve critical operational problems. A Senior Manager will lead strategy and execution of building out the Cassandra offering on our newly minted database platform. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in building database platforms (DBaaS), specifically with open source, noSQL tooling such as Cassandra. At GEICO, our managers are technical members of our team and are expected to work with individual contributors to develop the system design and have the coding skills necessary to implement the solution.Position ResponsibilitiesAs a Senior Staff Engineering Manager, you will:Leading the team responsible for designing, building and operating Cassandra as part of our database platform (DBaaS)Work with your Director to address project dependencies, negotiate and estimate incremental delivery dates for milestones with the stakeholder community, and deliver projects on timeReport on your team’s progress for project and other key metrics, in addition to presenting detailed and implementable ideas for areas to further improve or influence product or project deliveryInitiate and support performance evaluation of team membersCultivate a culture that motivates all levels of performers to higher levels of achievementBuild and maintain relationships with your team members to support an environment of trustInfluence those you motivate and coach to be receptive to feedback by cultivating a culture that acknowledges and expects individuals to grow and be accountableIdentify where technical or analytical skill gaps put future team deliverables at risk and craft a plan to remediate, consistently challenge team members to share knowledge and learn new technologiesProficiently execute difficult conversations on development and performanceQualificationsYou have built enterprise-scale platform services, ideally hosting relational and/or non-relational workloadsStrong knowledge of operating Cassandra at scaleKnowledge of cloud computing technologies and concepts (SaaS, PaaS, IaaS, etc.)Working knowledge of object-oriented developmentProven ability to demonstrate a capacity for learning technical concepts and adapting to new technologies quicklyStrong Cloud (AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.) platform knowledgeProficiency in Project Management and work item management tools such as Github and Azure DevOpsStrong foundation in algorithms, data structures, and core computer science conceptsFluency with RESTful Web Services and Event Driven ArchitecturesFluency with at least one modern language such as Python, Java, Go and experience with open-source software is a big plusExperience with application monitoring tools and performance assessmentsConstructing, interpreting, and applying metrics to your work and decision making, able to use those metrics to identify correlation between drivers and results, and using that information todrive prioritization and actionExperience6+ years coding experience5+ years of development in a large-scale, mission-critical environment5+ years of hands-on work experience supervising personnel in a technical environment2+ years of experience with automated testing including Unit, Integration, and End-to-End functional testingEducationBachelor’s Degree in Information Technology or related field, or equivalent experience#LI-JV1Annual Salary$150,000.00 - $300,000.00 The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/ annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate.
