The Immigrant & Refugee Services Division at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark seeks a Staff Attorney to provide legal orientation programming for unrepresented individuals and families in asylum merits interviews and immigration court proceedings. Under the supervision of a Supervising Staff Attorney, the Staff Attorney will be responsible for the following primary job duties:
Providing legal orientation presentations to unrepresented individuals appearing in immigration court, in order to help them understand and navigate the process
Preparing and delivering self-help workshops for unrepresented individuals
Providing referrals for social services and pro bono placements
Serving as friend of court during immigration court hearings
Working as part of the project team to recruit and train volunteers, manage data and reporting
Liaising with national project network on best practices, legal developments, trainings, and materials
Performing other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor
Required qualifications:
J.D. from an ABA accredited law school
Admission to practice law in one of the 50 states
Ability to handle several projects and tasks simultaneously
Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Bilingual in English and Spanish
Prior experience working in a non-profit setting and/or immigration law is preferred but not required
Compensation commensurate with experience.
