The Immigrant & Refugee Services Division at Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark seeks a Staff Attorney to provide legal orientation programming for unrepresented individuals and families in asylum merits interviews and immigration court proceedings. Under the supervision of a Supervising Staff Attorney, the Staff Attorney will be responsible for the following primary job duties:Providing legal orientation presentations to unrepresented individuals appearing in immigration court, in order to help them understand and navigate the processPreparing and delivering self-help workshops for unrepresented individualsProviding referrals for social services and pro bono placementsServing as friend of court during immigration court hearingsWorking as part of the project team to recruit and train volunteers, manage data and reportingLiaising with national project network on best practices, legal developments, trainings, and materialsPerforming other duties and responsibilities assigned by the supervisorRequired qualifications:J.D. from an ABA accredited law schoolAdmission to practice law in one of the 50 statesAbility to handle several projects and tasks simultaneouslyAbility to communicate complex issues clearly and concisely, both orally and in writingBilingual in English and SpanishPrior experience working in a non-profit setting and/or immigration law is preferred but not requiredCompensation commensurate with experience.
