Research & DevelopmentSummary:The Product Usability Manager works in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of New Product Commercialization (NPC) engineers, designers and researchers. In addition, they work with clinicians, customers and users, product management, marketing, and field teams to optimize user interactions and help define and develop new product technologies to meet user needs.This position has a strong focus on Human Factors Engineering to drive significant design improvements in product user interfaces and will be responsible for human factors-based research, analysis, and testing. The Product Usability Manager will set strategy and manage usability activities for large scale development projects.Responsibilities:Responsible for understanding the interactions between product users and all aspects of the product/solution. Applies theory, principles, data, and methods within the engineering design process to assure proper interaction between products, processes and the people who use them.Define ‘design for usability’ acceptance criteria that will meet customer expectations. Drive usability evaluation of new features.Work closely with customers, marketing, clinical applications and field personnel to understand key usability needs and develop metrics to quantify usability design.Provide domain expertise to participate in technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigations with focus on evaluation of design of user workflows, interactions, and experiences based on user-centered design principles and customer needs.Work with design teams to lead formative usability studies, including developing study plans, scripts and reports during new product development.Ensure product safety and quality by planning and executing summative usability studies.Work with new product development core teams to lead usability design and own usability-related program deliverables (Use analysis report, UFMEA, Known Use Problems analysis, etc).Shape the Experience Design usability roadmap. Engage with internal and external usability experts & capture cross-industry best practices.Guide and coach less experienced engineers on Human Factors Engineering principles and methods and application to medical device design.Define and lead usability strategy for complex platform and new product development projects including leadership influence, cross-functional and cross business unit collaboration, and effective management of usability activities and deliverables.Performs other duties as required.Requirements:Number of Overall Years Necessary: 5-8B.A./B.S in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, or Industrial Engineering with at least 7 years of experience OR advanced degree (M.S./Ph.D.) in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, or Industrial Engineering with at least 5 years of experienceDemonstrated experience in Human Factors Engineering and its role in the broader human centered design processProven ability to develop timely and effective solutions for challenging design problemsEffective communication skills - ability to present ideas clearly and conciselyDemonstrated ability to pursue tasks to completionIdeally have medical device or other highly regulated type industry experience.Specialized Skills/Technical Knowledge:Experience applying Human Factors Engineering in medical device product development, healthcare, and/or other similar regulated industryFamiliarity with applying medical device standards such as IEC 62366-1 and ISO 14971Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems. Ability to document, plan, market, and execute projects.
