The City of Berkeley is seeking a Deputy Director of Health, Housing, and Community Services! In this role, you will direct programs and assist in the overall management of the Health, Housing, and Community Services (HHCS) Department in support of a mission to enhance community life and support housing, health, and wellness for all.

As Deputy Director of HHCS, you will participate in the planning, development, administration, and evaluation of operations and budget for the department in collaboration with division managers and staff. Reporting to the Director of HHCS, you'll be responsible for formulating policy, developing goals and objectives, supervising staff, and ensuring that all assigned programs and services are managed effectively and that resources are utilized efficiently.

Divisions within the HHCS Department include Aging Services, Housing & Community Services, Environmental Health, Mental Health, and Public Health.

Minimum Qualifications:

A typical way of gaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position is:Graduation from a four-year college or university with major coursework in Business or Public Administration, Sociology, Psychology, Public Health, or a closely related field.Five (5) years of administration, policy development, program or budget management experience in a governmental agency. At least three (3) years of this experience must have included supervision of professional staff, and major responsibility for analyzing and establishing administrative and budgetary systems and controls at a department or agency level.Experience with citizen-participation based planning efforts, citizen boards and commissions, and state and federal grant administration is highly desirable. Knowledge of program areas, such as public health, mental health, housing, community services or related fields is desirable. Progressively responsible related experience may be substituted for the college coursework on a year for year basis.

Other Requirements:

Must be willing to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record. Must be able to attend evening or weekend meetings and events, as required.

The examination process and dates are subject to change. The City may, without notice, change or eliminate any assessment component as needs dictate. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring departments will use to conduct final selection interviews.
