Work for the World.Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe IMF’s Legal Department (LEG) aims at promoting and preserving the rule of law and financial integrity, which is essential to the IMF in carrying out its mandate. The General Counsel of the Fund is also the Director of the Legal Department.As General Counsel, s/he will provide legal advice and analysis to the Fund’s Board of Governors, Executive Board, the authorities of member countries, the international legal community, and IMF management and staff on topical issues. More specifically, s/he is responsible for the preparation and interpretation of legal decisions and instruments, including amendments of the Articles of Agreement, quota issues, resolutions of the Board of Governors, By-Laws, Rules and Regulations, and decisions of the Executive Board. The General Counsel is also the Secretary of the Ethics Committee of the Executive Board. In that capacity, s/he deals with the management of the Code of Conduct of the Executive Board and its application to the personnel of the Offices of Executive Directors. In addition, the General Counsel represents the Fund in all internal and external legal disputes and collaborates with other departments to ensure adequate integration of legal principles in all policy and operational work.As the Director of LEG, s/he will provide both intellectual and people leadership by setting and building ownership for the strategic direction of the department, and overseeing the planning, management and supervision of the work and staff. Working collaboratively with other departments, s/he will also oversee the provision of technical assistance to member countries on topical issues, such as financial and fiscal law, governance, anti-corruption and the rule of law, AML/CFT, digitalization, cross-border payments, climate, corporate and household insolvency, sovereign debt, and gender.Minimum QualificationsA Juris Doctor or equivalent law degree at the Master’s level or above, with substantial experience in a senior leadership role managing the legal aspects of international economic and financial issues.Deep understanding of the IMF's mandate, operations, legal framework, and the applicable legal principles.Independent thinker, a pragmatic and excellent problem-solver, adept at designing solutions.As a senior leader, experience leading and managing a diverse team, with a track record of building accountability for a shared strategic direction; organizing and delegating work; and supervising and coaching managers and staff.Proven ability to integrate legal advice into policy and operational work, including through effective collaboration with stakeholders and skillful balancing of stakeholder needs.Outstanding intellectual and interpersonal skills, including ability to establish strong relationships with internal and external collaborators.Ability to convey complex legal concepts in a clear and accessible way.Department:
