POSITION SUMMARY:

The position of Chief Judge of the Fort Berthold District Court (which is the Tribal Court of the Three Affiliated Tribes, also known as the MHA Nation) entails presiding, in a professional manner, over legal courtroom proceedings and some input into the administration of the Court. The duties performed require the individual to exercise considerable independent judgment in managing the Court docket, ruling on motions and other pre-trial matters, conducting hearings, and deciding cases in a fair and impartial manner to the ends that justice may be administered and law order maintained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:

Supervises for some purposes the Associate Judge(s) and some Court staff; counsels them regarding matters of policies and procedures and effective sentencing; and offers suggestions and corrections with regard to some administrative matters.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Presides at arraignments, pre-trial conferences, civil and criminal trials and other special hearings; and hears and disposes of civil and criminal cases and other special matters.

Reviews and supervises the maintenance of the Tribal Court docket.

Approves and signs criminal warrants, emergency orders, and other legal documents.

Adopts Court rules and regulations for the internal administration of the Court such as records management, access and safekeeping; information dissemination; public relations; Court security; and personnel conduct and intra-department conduct.

Assists with the preparation and administration of the Court's annual budget.

Demonstrates continuous effort to improve Court operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer services.

QUALIFICATIONS OF CHIEF JUDGE:

Juris Doctorate from an ABA accredited law school.

Attorney licensed by a State and the Fort Berthold District Court and in good standing with both the licensing State and the Three Affiliated Tribes.

Experience in Federal Indian law.

Valid driver's license with the ability to obtain a North Dakota license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

MHA Nation Public Safety and Judicial Center with indoor office space and courtrooms.
