Director of Business Development

Brown Technology Innovations is focused on putting Brown technology first by commercialization and service to our customers. We adhere to core values of promptness, transparency, and accountability. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director position focuses on serving two customers - the inventors who make Brown technology and the investors, companies, and entrepreneurs who commercialize it. The Director must have aptitude in technology evaluation, intellectual property protection; and sourcing, negotiating, and executing transactions in the life science arenas of therapeutics, diagnostics, and health information technology. Responsibilities Technology Evaluation and Intellectual Property Management Soliciting and evaluating invention disclosures from Brown faculty members. Identifying between IP protection and industry sponsored research pathways. Aptitude for making prompt decisions on patent filings by utilizing patentability and market data. Providing direction to outside counsel and inventors on patent decisions. Accountability for an individual patent budget. Sourcing, negotiation, and execution of technology deals. Network to develop new leads. Understand, synthesize, and effectively communicate technology in both verbal and written formats. Established track record of technology deals including intellectual property licenses, industry sponsored research agreements, and collaborations. Source and drive deals towards execution and have accountability around the metrics of the deal process including sourcing (engagement, NDAs), negotiation (termsheets, drafts), and execution (deal volume and amounts). Qualifications Education in relevant technical fields (science, engineering, etc.). Advanced technical or business or law degree. 10 years of experience in business development, innovation management, technology commercialization, or equivalent. Experience working in or with academic institutions is a plus. Aptitude in patent prosecution; genuine interest in early-stage technology development and markets. Proven advanced written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to effectively convey technical, legal, and financial information. Understand and facility with intellectual property licensing and industry sponsored research agreements including structure, valuation, and negotiation. Sizeable network of technology investors, business development groups, and entrepreneurs to access. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with diverse internal and external constituencies at all levels of the organization. Demonstrated ability to work independently on detailed analysis of complex policies, problem-solving, and follow-through on assignments with minimal direction. Demonstrated ability to support a community of diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment. Additional Information Applicants are asked to include a resume with their application.
