Purpose of Position

Under general supervision of the Manager of Plant Operations, the Painter works in a multi-functional team made up of other painters, carpenters and roofers to perform skilled painting work at the experienced trade level in painting, caulking, and patching both exterior and interior surfaces of buildings, equipment and other structural surfaces. These duties are performed either on the 1st shift, a weekend shift or another alternative shift based on the needs of the University.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are customary for this position, but are not to be construed as all-inclusive. Duties may be added, deleted and assigned based on management discretion and institutional needs.

Prepares and cleans surfaces by use of sandpaper, burners, scrapers, sanding machines, dusters and paint removers

Caulks windows, doors, and other openings as well as fills cracks, holes or joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other fillers using caulking guns or putty knives

Applies primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces such as bare wood, drywall, or metal for finish coats

Applies paint, stain, varnish, enamel or other finishes to equipment, buildings, or other structures using brushes, spray guns or rollers

Performs glazing, paper hanging and repairing of plaster

Applies waterproof materials to exterior of buildings

Prepares and applies ingredients to texture ceilings

Mix and match colors of paint, stain or varnish with oil or thinning and drying additives to obtain desired colors and consistencies

Erect and remove portable metal scaffolding or ladders to work above ground level

Cleans brushes, containers, spray guns and other equipment following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean environment

Operates university vehicles and equipment

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains excellent communication/customer service with Building Coordinators and all other DFM Supervisors

Communicates bi-laterally with other supervisors within DFM to coordinate work activities between groups

Performs other duties as required

Knowledge and Skills Essential for Success

Mechanical & operational knowledge of all machines & tools related to the painting trade, including their uses, repair and maintenance

Ability to provide on-the-job training/coaching to team members in your field of expertise

Basic computer skills to access/send emails and perform data entry into the maintenance work order system

Ability to monitor and assess performance of yourself to make improvements or take corrective action

Ability to talk to others and convey information effectively

Ability to manage one's own time effectively and efficiently

Must be familiar with and have experience in the use of radio protocol

Ability to work effectively in a service-oriented environment subject to frequently changing priorities.

Ability to work well individually and as a team member

Being reliable, responsible, dependable and able to fulfill obligations

Being careful about detail and thorough in completing work tasks

Ability to accept criticism and react calmly and effectively with high stress situations

Possess basic computer skills, familiar with web/internet navigation, and willingness to learn and utilize new technology based products as applicable

Adhere to all University policies and regulations

Physical Abilities Required

Must be able to perform strenuous physical labor, which includes heavy lifting, carrying up to 50 lbs.

Must pass pulmonary function test and wear a respirator for asbestos removal work duties

Must pass WKU asbestos removal certification course

Requires working outdoors in all types of weather conditions

Ability to bend, crawl, reach, kneel, climb ladders & scaffolding, and able to navigate tight spaces, as well as working in hot, noisy environments, working aloft and in confined spaces

Ability to keep or regain your body balance or stay upright when in an unstable position

Ability to use your abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without giving out or fatiguing

The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms and/or legs

Ability to keep your hand and arm steady while moving your arm or while holding your arm and hand in one position

The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer)

Must be able to wear protective eye wear, gloves, ear wear and top of head during work times for one's safety as the task dictates

Job Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED equivalency

At least three years of experience as a painter

Must possess and maintain a valid Kentucky driver's license

Additional Information:

Hourly Range: $15.75-$16.78
