PURPOSE OF JOB:

Responsible for performing a variety of painting activities and related tasks including application of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trim, and fixtures of building and other structures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Paint surfaces using brush, spray gun, or paint rollers.Prepare substrates to receive paint by smoothing surfaces, using sandpaper, brushes, or steel wool, to remove old paint from surfaces, using paint remover, scraper, wire brush, or blowtorch.Fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other filler, using caulking gun and putty knife.Select premixed paints, or mix required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.Remove fixtures, such as pictures and electric switch covers from walls prior to painting, using screwdriver.Spread drop cloths over floors and room furnishing and cover surfaces, such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.Erect scaffolding or set up ladders to perform tasks above ground level as required.Install baseboards and install, tape, and finish drywall as needed including making signage as appropriate.May apply paint with cloth, brush, sponge, or fingers to create special effects such as simulating wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.May hang wallpaper and fabrics.May wash surfaces with mildew remover prior to painting.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma/GED plus four (4) years full-time directly related work experience.Read and write English at the level normally attained in high school in order to read work orders and receive instructions from supervisor regarding painting.Communicate effectively with coworkers in person and by telephone using correct English and a courteous manner.Knowledge of various paints and substitutes, paint tools, equipment, and methods of application.Ability to work neatly in a timely manner with minimal supervision.Must be able to identify and express problems and develop solutions from alternative methods and procedures.Ability to drive all types of light vehicles safely.Ability to discriminate colors, visual depth relationships, and see near and far distances.Detect odors by smell.

This job requires that the employee be able to: stand and or work on feet for entire shift, work at fast pace with interruptions, maintain sufficient dexterity to operate painting equipment, perform repetitive motions, reach, bend, and stretch in all directions; be able to climb and maneuver on ladders or scaffolds and perform duties requiring good balance such as walking on a ledge. Primarily inside in normal indoor temperatures, work outside up to 25% of the time during weather that would permit outside painting. Job requires the employee to occasionally lift seventy-five (75) pounds from floor to knee level, from floor to waist level, from floor to overhead, and from knee level to waist level. Occasionally carry fifty (50) pounds for a distance of two hundred fifty (250) feet and grip strength of seventy-five (75) pounds. Perceive environmental alerting sounds such phone, pager, and alarms. Daily exposure to strong scents, fumes, or dust. Visual ability to discriminate colors, visual depth relationships, and see near and far distances. Responsibilities will require a flexible work schedule with night shift and frequent moves from one work location to another. May be required to work other shifts to include evenings and/or weekends and schedule subject to change based on department needs.

Must be able to operate equipment such as high pressure washer, airless spray equipment, airless paint striper, paint rollers, brushes, sanding tools, caulking gun, compressed air guns, compressors, turbine sprayer and miscellaneous small hand tools.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of work year: 12 months;

may be required to work various shifts to include evenings and/or weekends. Schedule subject to change based on department needs.
