Under the direction of the test lab manager, the Quality Control Inspector will perform routine first article inspections on assemblies, sub-assemblies, and piece parts for U-Haul trucks and trailers. This includes hand measurements, 3D scanning, hardness testing, and strength testing amongst other things. Detailed analysis of material certificates, engineering drawings, and other technical documents is required to ensure all parts submitted meet criteria. Test technicians will judge the quality of first articles and issue approval or rejection of each part.
Essential Duties:
Use calipers, micrometers, tape measures, height gauges, thread gauges, optical comparators, Rockwell hardness testers, and other specialty measurement equipment to obtain accurate and consistent measurements
Read and interpret complex engineering drawings with GD&T of assemblies, sub-assemblies, and piece parts to determine if a given part meets criteria
Perform tensile, shear, and compression testing using an Instron universal testing machine, and interpret graphical results
Ability to operate/learn to operate a 3D scanner with CMM probe when precision digital measurements are required
Recognize different materials (steel, aluminum, plastics, wood etc.) and coatings (zinc, cadmium, anodization, paint, powder coat etc.)
Read and interpret vendor provided documentation including spec sheets, PPAP certifications, material certifications, plating certifications, and dimensional/strength test reports
Read, interpret, and perform tests according to IFI and ASTM standards
Have exceptional organizational skills and a keen eye for detail
Use judgement and measured data to issue approval or rejection of each part
Reasonable and predictable attendance is essential.
Prior Experience:
1-3 years required in a relevant field such as first article inspection, quality assurance or other lab/manufacturing settings
High school diploma with additional training desired.
Skills Required:
Must be able to operate a variety of tools and testing equipment.
Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, schematics and test standards as they relate to specific test requirements.
Must have basic mechanical skills related to vehicles, trailers and machinery.
Knowledge of various manufacturing methods and processes and how they relate to given parts (welding, sheet metal bending/forming, riveting, painting, plating etc)
Tools:
Utilize equipment such as micrometers, calipers, gages, rivet gun, air and electric hand tools, fork lift, tensile testing machine, 3D scanner/CMM
