ABA employees are eligible to apply for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF).Job SummaryThe American Bar Association (ABA) Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence seeks a Director in Washington, D.C. to lead the Association's portfolio of staff-led grant projects while leveraging the expertise of Association members and interdisciplinary partners to drive policy development and programming. Our mission is to increase access to justice for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking by mobilizing the legal profession to improve systems, services, and outcomes. We accomplish our mission by advancing policy and best practices primarily through educational advocacy, training, and technical assistance.The Director will serve as the Association's national expert on domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence, undertaking the highest level of substantive legal work and providing leadership and support to the Commission staff and members. The Director is responsible for budget development and management, including grant development and fundraising. The Director is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising the work of other attorneys (including senior attorneys) and support staff of the entity and serves as the primary facilitator with other ABA departments. The Director will conduct in-depth legal research, writing, and publishing as well as serve as a presenter/trainer at national conferences and other programming.Essential Job Functions and ResponsibilitiesServe as the principal ABA expert on law, policy, and best practices in the field of domestic and sexual violence. Develop and lead the strategic and business planning and implementation for the Commission's programs/activities, including budget development and management, writing grant proposals, and leading efforts to diversify and increase funding.Conduct legal or other research. Write memoranda, speeches, articles including for publication. Participate in development of amicus briefs to the US Supreme Court.Provide substantive advice, information, and policy. Serve as principal ABA expert in a substantive area of law or public policy. May conduct research and facilitate meetings or related training; develop recommendations and memos. Includes contacts with government entities including officials, law firms, bar groups, and with media. Research, draft, author, review and critique legislative/rule/policy or regulatory text.Manage policy adoption process. Written and in-person contacts with elected officials, staff and bar leaders regarding legislation or ABA policies.Give presentations and/or teach on legal or policy issues. Act as a consultant designing substantive content of events, developing model documents, and conducting training for external groups.Responsible for hiring, managing, supervising and mentoring other counsels, who may also manage staff of the commission or unit.Foster collaboration with other ABA entities as well as external partners.Performs other related duties as required.Required Education, Qualifications, ExperienceRequires JD and active bar admission in at least one jurisdiction.Minimum 10 years in law practice in the appropriate substantive area of law.Experience in resource development, program conception and management, and personnel management required.Strong communication and organizational skills, ability to exercise independent judgment, and ability to work well with multiple constituencies.Experience in a not-for-profit or volunteer member setting desirable.Preferred Education, Qualifications, ExperienceA deep commitment to ending gender-based violence and an understanding of how interpersonal and institutional power, privilege, and oppression affect the lives of domestic and sexual violence survivors.Experience with budget development and launching innovative programming and initiatives.
