This is a hybrid role based out of our Houston, TX Office.

SCOPE:

The Indirect Tax Accountant will actively participate in the development of Indirect Taxes (Sales & Use Tax and Abandoned Property/Escheat Filing) within MHIA Tax Department. The Indirect Tax Accountant will provide tax support and indirect tax accounting expertise to various group companies reporting under MHIA.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Tax Compliance:

Analyze and accurately prepare or review required tax returns and related payments.Ensure the appropriate taxes are collected or assessed and properly remitted including Nexus Studies and Voluntary Disclosure Agreements.Compile state sales & use tax data from Tax Software such as Vertex &OneSource.Handle requests for sales & use tax information including applicable taxability and rate determinations.Maintain and file all customer records, sales tax reports and documents including resale certificates using certificate management tools or otherwise.Review, validate, and advise on exemption certificate management.Understand the business activities and resale/ exemptions applicable thereon.Reconcile general ledger state sales & use tax accounts. Prepare and reconcile all adjusting and accruing sales tax journal entries and balance sheet accounts.Develop Unclaimed Property Processes including historical resolution. Preparation of sales & use tax registrations for new jurisdictions.

Technical Tax Research - Monitor, research and examine tax issues affecting group companies and communicate appropriate tax positions through written or oral presentation.Tax Audits - Assist with indirect tax controversy notices. Assemble and maintain accounting and tax records to support filed returns.Tax Technology - Identify ways to streamline and improve processes through data analytics and other technology tools including software integration. Educate and train clients on these solutions.Assist with other projects as necessaryQUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree in Accounting. Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred.Experience:

At least 4 years of related experience working in the tax department of a large corporation and multinational.

Any special skills/training/certifications:

Excellent coordination, detail-oriented skills to manage various group companies' indirect tax simultaneously.Excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially the ability to explain complex tax issues to the business.Resourceful/innovative/creative-looks for better ways to do thingsEnterprise systems knowledge (SAP, Microsoft Dynamics)Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word). Advanced Excel knowledge.Experience working on process improvement projects preferredOrganized and can manage competing deadlines and due datesExperience utilizing Vertex or OneSource tax system (a plus)

WORKING CONDITIONS:
