I. JOB OVERVIEW

Job Description Summary:

Established in 1865, The George Washington University Law School is the oldest in Washington, DC. The school is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools. The law school is located on the GW campus in the downtown neighborhood familiarly known as Foggy Bottom.

The Director, Employer Relations and Outreach in the Center for Professional Development and Career Strategy of The George Washington University Law School (the “Career Center”) serves as the liaison between the Career Center and employers for law students and alumni, provides outreach to the community, and represents the Career Center to university and external entities. This position also directs all employment and internship recruitment events for GW Law School.

This position reports to the Associate Dean, Professional Development and Career Strategies and is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Leads and directs the development and implementation of all recruiting programming.
  • Works with Associate Dean to identify strategic opportunities.
  • Conducts regular strategic outreach to all types of legal employers, cultivating relationships in multiple markets and a wide range of industries and employment settings.
  • Serves as a liaison between GW Law School, its students and alumni, and employers on a local, regional, and national scale. Provides information to employers on internships and externships, resume referrals, job-listing services, and other services offered by the Career Center.
  • Provides leadership and plans for all virtual and in-person recruitment and interviewing events and processes for GW Law School all employment sectors.
  • Engages with employers through recruiting programs and other initiatives. Cultivates relationships with new employers to create additional employment opportunities in new markets, areas of practice, and industries.
  • Expands job and internship opportunities for GW Law students by developing and nurturing relationships with law firms, governmental organizations, and public-interest organizations; and cultivates relationships with alumni in such organizations through outreach and collaboration with other resources in GW Law School.
  • Supervises the daily activities and operations of the Employer Outreach team by managing assigned staff, including work allocation, training, evaluation of performance, and motivating employees to achieve peak productivity and performance.
  • Develops and directs a data-driven system to evaluate and measure the effectiveness of recruitment and employer engagement efforts and programming.
  • Provides regular reporting to the Associate Dean on outcomes of employer outreach efforts and recruiting programs.
  • Represents the Career Center at national, regional, and local meetings of appropriate professional organizations and associations and periodically interfaces with law career counselors at other law schools.
  • Serves as the primary liaison to the admissions office for purposes of communicating with incoming transfer students about access to recruiting programs.
  • Manages employer communications. Develops and implements a creative marketing and advertising program for employer outreach by coordinating the publishing of materials and information related to the Career Center’s programs, activities, and initiatives, including but not limited to: social media marketing, flyers, and posters.
  • Facilitates Employer Outreach staff training ensures that all team members are able to use critical functions in the CORE/12twenty platform (and other technology used by the office) such as job postings, employment outcomes data entry, setting up interviewing programs, managing employer accounts, communications, and custom reporting.
  • Fosters an effective collaboration and sharing of information between the Employer Outreach, Career Counselors, and Placement functions within the Careers office to best serve student outcomes.

The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • JD from an ABA-accredited law school is preferred.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of employment outreach services for law students, including recruiting initiatives for the private sector, government, and Public- Interest organizations is desired.
  • Knowledge and understanding of career practices and opportunities within the local, regional, national, and global legal communities, including in law firms, the public sector, and public-interest organizations preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Managerial experience, including formal supervision of staff, monitoring production and overall work quality of direct reports and fostering collaboration among highly skilled team members is desired.
  • Strong technology and data skills including spreadsheets and data reporting, or a basic familiarity and a willingness and commitment to acquire skills needed to be effective in the role preferred.

$88,562.15 - $128,379.87
