Duties Summary

Participates in the Professional Development Trainee Program for the County of Hawai‘i designed to provide on-the-job training and experience and receives training and mentorship in planning and carrying out professional activities and assignments.

There is one (1) immediate temporary full-time vacancy not-to-exceed 12 (twelve) months with the Office of the Prosecuting Attorney in Hilo.Examples of Duties

Assists counselors with assessing the nature and degree of immediate and long term assistance, provide crisis or short term counseling to traumatized victims; assess need and inform victims of and make referrals to appropriate government or community agencies for support services; act as liaison between the victim/witness and criminal justice agencies; work with deputy prosecutors to provide assessment of client's ability and strength as a witness in a courtroom setting; ascertain victim's feelings toward prosecution of case; provide timely/immediate support to the victims/witnesses at various location such as courts, police substations, parole hearings around the island or within the state; contact victim/witness to inform of program services; educate victim/witness about the criminal justice system and the roles of various participants and agencies.Assist counselors with advocating on behalf of victims/witnesses in concurrence with attorneys, judges, and probation officers or other agency personnel; prepare correspondence, case records, reports and other documents; collect and compile information concerning cases; assist victim/witness with compensation, restitution, financial, social or medical programs and property return.Assist counselors with coordinating victim/witnesses appearance at court hearings and provide support and orientation as needed; arrange for and operate a motor vehicle to provide timely transportation to hearings, interviews, and other meetings related to the criminal justice system; assist with hotel and other travel accommodations.Assist counselors with educating the community through participation in community awareness activities, such as presentations, radio interviews and informational booths; provide intercession with creditors and employers.Assist counselors by working cooperatively with other agencies to improve response to victim concerns.Assist counselors by participating in the overall planning discussion and development of a comprehensive victim centered restorative response to the criminal justice process.Assist counselors with other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:an

associate’s degree

from an accredited college or university in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field (scan and attach a copy of your official college transcript to your application), andpossession of a valid State of Hawai‘i Driver License (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire.)

Note:

Only associate's degrees from an accredited college or university will be accepted.

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Ability to: learn and apply basic principles, concepts, and work processes fundamental to the professional work to be performed; learn and apply laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures, and reference materials fundamental to the specialty area; understand, interpret, and apply the principles, standard methods and techniques, laws, rules and regulations, and guides; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; communicate effectively and follow oral and written instructions; understand and follow complex, detailed technical instructions, and work both independently and in a team environment.
