The Star Tribune is looking for a skilled, digital-savvy copy editor who is deft with words and headlines, thrives under deadline pressure and would be a strong contributor to our dedicated production team. This editor will work across multiple content areas.
We want a colleague who is solutions-driven and agile in meeting digital and print deadlines while ensuring that Star Tribune content meets standards for quality, accuracy, style and taste. This editor must have a track record of high-level copy editing ability - news judgment, balance and clarity - and understand how these skills can help reach audiences on multiple platforms. We require an excellent eye for detail, time-management skills and an eagerness to learn about best practices in the craft.
A top ability is a well-honed flair for writing excellent digital and SEO headlines, as well as experience in digital curation, promotion and newsletters. You must have a flexible approach to work and deft communication skills to collaborate with other journalists. You also have the demeanor to work quickly and calmly under deadline pressure - and then consistently meet deadlines. You've proved you will take initiative and are willing to learn and adapt in a changing industry.
Pay for this position is based on experience, as outlined in the contract of
Star Tribune and the Minnesota Newspaper and Communications Guild .
Qualifications & Competencies
Experience in editing, headline writing and digital curation at a daily news organizationA proven communicator and collaborator capable of working with people from all disciplines across the newsroom: editors, reporters, photographers, designersEdit content for typographical, factual, syntactical, punctuation, style, mathematical, spelling (including proper nouns), contextual or grammatical errorsWrite headlines, cutlines, summaries and other display elements that entice readers into stories online and in print and accurately reflect story contentCurate and promote stories on digital platforms amid a strong desire for digital innovation and experimentationTag stories with SEO-optimized termsTrim content to fit print space limitations and particular design specificationsPublish stories to our various platformsStrong news judgment and knowledge of current eventsA highly refined ability to spot errorsExperienced with social media promotionA sense of humor, resilience and respect
Schedule : Variable hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.
