Job SummaryThe Lab Supervisor facilitates and implements NIH-funded clinical research protocols which include the meticulous processing of specimens, performance of specialized assays, and precise documentation of all procedures on a 24-hour basis. The incumbent processes samples for investigator-initiated studies, requiring independence, flexibility, and excellence in sample processing techniques. Ensures all clinical research samples and assays are processed accurately and in accordance with methods and guidelines specific to individual protocols. Interfaces with investigators, clinical coordinators, industry sponsors, nurses, and other personnel to clarify lab policies, receive samples, provide sample results, and for sample accessioning. This position will have experience in histopathology laboratory work such as tissue processing, embedding, and microtomy. The incumbent will also have expertise in collecting, dissecting, and processing surgical biospecimens according to CAP clinical guidelines from operating rooms, clinics, and surgical pathology labs.

The incumbent will be responsible for training new BSPL staff as needed and recommends and implements improvements to sample processing practices. The incumbent is responsible for supervising other staff research associates in the BSPL. In addition, the incumbent assists the lab manager/director with the cost recovery activities, including preparing budgets for study protocols and preparing monthly billing reports.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $77,900 - $116,900 (Annual Rate).

Department DescriptionThe Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) is a large, highly complex research unit within the Office of the AVC-CR that spans the four UCSF health science schools (Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry), the UCSF Graduate Division, and collaborating affiliates of UCSF. The mission of CTSI is to facilitate clinical and translational research to improve patient and community health. CTSI does this by providing infrastructure, services, and training to make research more efficient. CTSI develops broad coalitions and partnerships at the local, regional, and national levels to enable a transformation of the research environment. CTSI has $25-$28M in annual funding from multiple sources (NIH, institutional, philanthropy, industry and other) and includes 20 interdisciplinary programs.

The clinical component of CTSI, Clinical Research Services (CRS) integrates the activities of multiple clinical research sites that provide adult and pediatric inpatient and outpatient clinical services to support the translation of promising clinical research ideas into successful protocols. CRS provides an array of core research services such as adult and pediatric nursing services, phlebotomy, and biospecimen processing. The Biospecimen Processing Lab (BSPL), a part of CRS, collects, processes, stores, and distributes bio specimens for research. The BSPL functions as a common biorepository for human biospecimens derived from patients who have consented to participate in clinical trials and research studies and are undergoing cancer treatments, surgeries, and other medical procedures.

Required Qualifications

BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or equivalent experience/training (CLIA HCT compliant) and three or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum 1 year laboratory experience in research and/or clinical setting.

Able to accurately perform data entry through electronic databases.

Excellent communication skills.

General molecular biology laboratory work experiences.

Skilled in use of microtome or cryostat.

Ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications

Skilled in use of microtome or cryostat.

Experience in handling human biospecimens for clinical diagnostics.

Lab safety training.

Blood-borne pathogen training.

Good Laboratory Practices Training.

Biosafety lab training.
