Director of Development National Academy of Medicine

Job Description Summary:The Office of Development seeks an experienced and highly motivated Director of Development for the National Academy of Medicine, who will be responsible for researching, systematically identifying, managing and fostering relationships with prospective and current sponsors and donors - including foundations, think tanks, major corporate and high net worth individuals - with an interest in funding scientific or policy-related work in the fields of public health, health care, biomedical science, and health equity. The Director of Development, NAM, will work under the direction of the NAM President and collaborate closely with NAM Executive and Program leadership to develop fundraising strategies and campaigns in alignment with the mission and programs of the NAM.The position will focus on identifying and cultivating philanthropists who want to engage and invest in efforts to advance population health and health equity that are of the highest quality, rigor, and independence. As such, the ideal candidate will possess knowledge of the public health and health care landscapes, as the position will be expected to liaise between NAM executives and program staff and potential donors. Importantly, the position should identify and steward major giving prospects, including supporting the development of funding proposals.ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:At the direction of the NAM President, in conjunction with the CDO, identifies, plans, and implements fundraising strategies for the NAM in alignment with the NAM's mission and priorities.Responsible for systematically researching and identifying foundations, think tanks, major corporate and high net worth individuals, whose interests are aligned with those of NAM programs, as potential sponsors and donors.Oversees all corporate and foundation-related development activities for the NAM. Maintains ongoing stewardship with current donors by identifying areas of mutual interest and developing relationships that meet NAM fundraising goals.Develops and writes grant proposals to corporate and foundation partners. Works with NAM Executive and Program leadership and staff to identify potential funders for their projects and activities.Manages and supports the growth of a portfolio of major individual donors (capable of gifts over $100K per year), maintaining existing donor relationships and fostering relationships with new donor prospects.Participates in strategic planning efforts. Identifies funding sources and opportunities. Develops strategies to cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects.Prepares annual fundraising plans including key performance indicators, revenue targets and expense forecasts following direction from the NAM President, in conjunction with the Chief Development Officer.Actively participates in building a culture of teamwork, collaboration, creativity and high performance with employees of the Academies, volunteers, donors, and members of the Academies.Monitors and reports on effectiveness of fundraising activities and strategies. Recommends and implements new ideas and opportunities for fundraising growth.Represents the Development Office in conferences, seminars and other public and private events to advance the goals of the organization.Provides leadership and mentors employees. Trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities.Remains current and fully informed of laws, techniques, and advancements in the fundraising profession.NONESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:Related duties and special projects as assigned.JOB SPECIFICATIONS:Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Appreciation of the importance of sciences, engineering and medicine and the mission of the Academies. Thorough understanding of philanthropy and trends in the profession. Knowledge and understanding of sophisticated fundraising practices including corporate giving, annual giving and planned giving techniques.Minimum Education/Training Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in related field, or equivalent knowledge.Minimum Experience:

Eight years of related professional experience; two of which were in a supervisory capacity.Required Licenses, Certification or Registration:

None.Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:

Reports to the Chief Development Officer. General direction is provided. Supervises assigned staff.Compensation Range:
