Seattle City Light is seeking an Associate Electrical Engineer to serve as a design engineer for the Utility's Grid Modernization Program. This position will report to the Supervising Principal Grid Modernization Power Systems Engineer. In this position you will be responsible for the implementation of multiple projects, including, for example, Distribution Automation FLISR, Line Sensor Deployment, DER Interconnection Studies and developing the supporting technical processes. This role will also support the exploration of new technical areas to address transmission and distribution system capacity and reliability needs, including utility-scale batteries, advanced modeling, and non-wire solutions. Performing engineering work for equipment installation and system integration for related pilot projects.

City Light's Electrification and Strategic Technology Division oversees the utility's efforts related to transportation and building electrification, grid modernization and strategic technology. With increasing electrification, the overall goal is to provide solutions for added growth and improved reliability implemented in an equitable fashion across the service territory.

Here is more about what you'll be doing:

Implement the Grid Modernization plans, related to the evolving design and operation of the utility's grid.

Support the evaluation and planning of resilient power distribution grid projects, which may include microgrids, automated switching distribution systems, etc.

Apply knowledge to improve utility operations and customer experiences.

Support project reporting associated with grid modernization programs, including reporting of metrics related to implementation progress and the achievement of project benefits.

Investigate new technologies and tools in the industry and assess their applicability to and relevance with the end goals of broad electrification, DER adoption, and advanced grid planning.

Work collaboratively across the utility to gain a thorough knowledge of the utility's strengths, challenges, and opportunities to support cross-functional efforts to develop and refine grid modernization strategic goals.

Support teams within Customer Service, Distribution Engineering, Substation Engineering, Protection Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, standards, system operations, field T&D operations, Utility Technology, regulatory, legal, communications/outreach, strategic planning and other groups to ensure effective and efficient implementation of grid modernization programs.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires three years of professional electrical engineering experience and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional electrical engineering work.
