Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Athletics at the University of Maryland seeks a dynamic and creative Assistant Director of Development to cultivate and solicit individual donors for Maryland Athletics and its initiatives and priorities. Reporting to the Associate Director of Development, the candidates will apply knowledge and understanding of the University of Maryland and Maryland Athletics, its traditions, programs, needs and priorities to the development process. The Assistant Director will represent Maryland Athletics to internal and external audiences while working with members of the university community to advance our mission. They must be able to persuasively discuss Athletic Department needs and priorities with prospective donors and volunteers.

The Assistant Director of Development will be assigned to support the major gift activities of Maryland Athletics and/or programs and geographic areas inside and outside of the metropolitan Washington, DC, area. The candidate will manage a portfolio of approximately 150 major gift prospects with the objective of discovering, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, closing and stewarding gifts from $10,000 - $1M+ and developing a strong portfolio of supporters. These individuals are expected to partner effectively with Athletic Department staff and leadership as well as coaches for fundraising strategy.

The Assistant Director will monitor all prospect contacts in their assigned portfolio to ensure positive and purposeful prospect and donor relations. They will organize, assist with, and attend programming and event activities for the Athletic Department and the university as appropriate. The Assistant Director may take on special fundraising projects as approved by the Associate Director of Development.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors at the $10,000 level and above.Make a minimum of 12-15 prospect visits each month, both locally and nationally. Additional metrics including the number of solicitations per year and gifts closed per year will be determined annually.The Assistant Director will report to the Associate Director of Development and work with them on donor strategies and fundraising goals. They will attend and may facilitate, in areas of expertise, specialized training and professional development sessions with University Relations and Athletic Department staff.

This position requires time out of the office to meet with prospective donors and travel is expected for approximately 50% of the time. Local and national travel are expected and some nights and weekends are required.

Education :

Bachelor's degree.

Experience:

A minimum of 3 years of successful development/fundraising experience, preferably within collegiate athletics.A proven record of working effectively and initiating and building relationships with prospects.A successful track record of engaging with annual and major gift level donors.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of best practices in the advancement field.Demonstrated interest in higher education advancement and the ability to represent the University of Maryland in a highly professional and effective manner.Ability to learn and promote the mission of Maryland Athletics.Ability to juggle multiple priorities and work independently, while also serving as a prominent and enthusiastic member of the Athletic Department's development team.Energetic professional with a proven track record of building excellent donor/client relationships.Willingness and ability to make "cold calls" and to cultivate relationships with and solicit individuals and/or corporations and foundations.Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well with diverse groups of constituents and colleagues.Strong writing, communication, and listening skills.Strong customer service ethic and experience overseeing successful events and activities.Preferences:

Preferences:

An advanced degree is desired.Background or strong interest in collegiate athletics or a related field.Familiarity with higher education fundraising and experience in a public research university is preferred.

Salary Range is $60,000-$70,000.

This position allows for a combination of in-person and telework days as approved by the supervisor. Guidance regarding hybrid work is subject to change at any time to align with operational or business needs.
