DutiesIf selected for this position, you will serve as a Paralegal Specialist for the Criminal Division in the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia's Norfolk Division.

Typical work assignments will include:

Preparing and organizing documentation, data, and evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial.

Researching case law and references such as agency manuals, directives, issuances, court reports, appellate records, or commercial legal publications using multiple online legal systems to locate appropriate information such as applicable precedents, legislative history and commentaries which bear on particular legal issues.

Drafting legal documents that identify the legal or factual issues in the case, locate precedents and develop legally supportable conclusions.

Preparing and organizing trial exhibits, documents, memoranda, reports and correspondence relating to cases for review by attorneys.

Preparing indices of legal and administrative material.

Reviewing, proofreading, and editing legal documents.

Maintaining evidence such as paper documents, PDF files, image files, audio files, video files, phone records, bank records, forensic reports, and other file types.

Assisting in court during hearings and trial.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Salary

$60,808 - $79,050/year

Conditions of Employment

You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.

If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.

Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.

QualificationsGS-9:

To be eligible at the GS-9 level, you must meet at least

ONE

of the following conditions:

Specialized Experience:

One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience performing paralegal or legal work which demonstrates a knowledge of legal research, legal writing, and the ability to interpret legal decisions.

Education:

A Master's or equivalent graduate degree (such as an LL.B. or J.D.);

OR

2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.

Combining Education and Experience:

Combinations of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. Graduate education must be in excess of 1 full year.
