Position ProspectusJob Summary:The Associate Vice President for Development reports to the Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development and leads University fundraising efforts for multiple central and/or school-based fundraising teams. Manages a team of senior development officers who are responsible for fundraising efforts that have a cumulative annual fundraising goal of $200+ million in cash and commitments. In addition to leading an overall team of 30+ professionals, the Associate Vice President serves as a strategic advisor to the vice president for Alumni Relations and Development and as an active member of the executive leadership team for Alumni Relations and Development. This position also manages a portfolio of 25-30 major and/or principal gift prospects.Please note: Frequent travel to visit prospects is required.Specific Responsibilities:Responsible for a portfolio of 25-30 major and principal gift prospects as well as a select number of leadership-level volunteers.In concert with the vice president and executive team, develop overarching strategic fundraising and engagement objectives for ARD and manage the implementation of activities with programs to achieve financial and programmatic goals of each area.Work with development senior staff and senior administration to articulate funding priorities and communicate the University's funding objectives.Provide leadership to a team of experienced fundraising managers. Work with managers to develop strategic objectives in alignment with the overarching goals of ARD and the University, setting fundraising goals, evaluating progress, overseeing budget development, and setting annual performance goals.Guide reporting teams into focused management of top major gift prospects, in concert with other senior colleagues and in coordination with school/unit teams across the University.Initiate reports, conduct studies, and perform other tasks related to development at the direction of the vice president.Maintain best-practice expertise in the field of development through participation in regional and national networks and industry-related associations.Support special projects and fundraising initiatives of the president and other University leaders. Develop strategic plans to advise leaders; support volunteers, and cultivate and solicit gifts.Maintain appropriate level of internal communications, reporting, and tracking of results; prepare information for trustees and formal internal report.Participate in meetings as appropriate to advance strategies for planned and major gift prospects.Miscellaneous:Performs other duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications:Baccalaureate degree.Ten to twelve years of development experience in positions of increasing responsibility in academic fundraising at a college or university with a comprehensive development program and proven success in gift closure at the seven-figure level is required.Demonstrated leadership ability to develop strategic plans, implement programs, organize, initiate, and motivate.Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)Strong management skills and proven ability to lead a team of individuals towards a common goal.Excellent communication skills, coupled with strong writing and presentation skills, as well as the ability to present before a group.An understanding of and a commitment to the unique aims, values, and mission of Northwestern University is required.Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues in a team environment.Discretion and an ability to interact with high-level donors.Comfort with personal computers and MS Office software programs.Preferred Qualifications:Comprehensive campaign experience at a multi-faceted institution is a plus.Target hiring range for this position will be between $320,000-$350,000 per year.
