Job Profile SummaryThis role focuses on activities related to revenue cycle operations such as billing, collections, and payment processing. Additionally, it includes performing Patient Access duties: administrative and financial-clearance tasks necessary for facilitating clinical services procurement by patients. This entry-level role typically requires little to no prior knowledge or experience, as work is routine, closely supervised, and involves communicating straightforward information.Job OverviewThis position is responsible for interviewing inpatients and outpatients courteously to obtain accurate patient registration data. Responsibilities include documenting demographic and financial information for scheduled visits and collecting patient liability (including deductibles, co-insurances, co-payments, etc.) and/or bad debt. This position also involves verifying patient insurance, confirming benefits eligibility, and performing pre-authorization as required by third-party providers.Preferred QualificationsHigh school diplomaOne (1) year of medical office, insurance, physician's office practice, or hospital registration experience.Bilingual.Duties and ResponsibilitiesConducts Pre-Registration tasks for specified inpatients and outpatients prior to their date of service, including collecting necessary information for financial clearance and verifying insurance.Obtains consent for treatments and authorizations as necessary, explaining requirements to patients and representatives.Verifies insurance coverage using eligibility tools and ensures accurate plan codes are added to registration.Collects information for auto and worker's compensation registrations and documents any missing information.Notifies patients of financial liabilities based on insurance benefits and appointment-specific charges.Actively participates in the collection of patient payments, understanding all related policies and procedures.Posts collected payments in the system of record and verifies compliance with department guidelines.Provides Financial Counselor contact information for patients qualifying for state-sponsored financial assistance.Obtains necessary authorizations and documents information in the system of record.Delivers excellent customer service and professional courtesy to all patients.Interacts courteously with physicians, nursing units, and office staff.Maintains confidentiality of hospital financial information in accordance with regulations.Meets area-specific benchmarks related to productivity and customer service.Physical RequirementsFrequent sitting, occasional standing or working, and lifting of 10-15 pounds.May be exposed to typical office-like discomforts.Manual dexterity for computer keyboard operation.Ability to see computer screen and read reports.Ability to hear instructions from clinical staff.Skills & AbilitiesComputer literacy including familiarity with word processing and electronic spreadsheets.Strong customer service skills, including interpersonal and telephone skills.High degree of tact due to frequent interactions with patients and insurance companies.Experience using computer-based patient registration systems.Understanding of private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid programs.Knowledge of medical terminology.Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.Tufts Medicine is a leading integrated health system bringing together the best of academic and community healthcare.
