POSITION SUMMARY

The Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner (PA/NP) provides a broad range of services including the assessment, identification and treatment of medical concerns, health education to patients, and illness and injury prevention. The PA/NP also acts as a consultant to the nursing staff. The incumbent is responsible for delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation; directs and guides ancillary personnel, while maintaining standards of professional nursing.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assesses patient/inmate's medical status and assists the Medical Director and Physician with patient health management as required.

2. Orders appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures to effectively diagnose and treat the patient's health condition.

3. Actively participates in the evaluation and monitoring of patients with use disorders, specifically opioid use disorder.

4. Ensures treatment of patients with addictive diseases, specifically, opioid use disorder is in keeping with the community standard of care.

5. Draws blood specimens for testing and performing other comparable procedures when personnel that customarily perform these procedures are not available.

6. Initiates referrals to other members of the health care team, monitors the schedule of patients for special tests.

7. Provides leadership to RNs and LPNs and other nursing paraprofessionals in patient care as related to medical aspects of patient care.

8. Counsels inmate-patients on preventative care, medical problems, and use of prescribed treatment.

9. Performs routine wound care, minor surgical procedures, and dressing changes.

10. Establishes individualized treatment plans and ensures the continuity of care for inmates requiring on-going health care services.

11. Utilizes the SOAP charting format to document pertinent inmate information in chronological order in the health record.

12. Prepares patients for and performs or assists in special treatments, procedures and examinations.

13. Makes infirmary rounds, housing rounds and staff the screening areas as requested.

14. Performs historical and physical examinations.

15. Maintains the confidentiality of inmate records.

16. Make suggestions for improving work conditions to the Medical Director and Health Services Administrator.

17. Assists with the orientation of new employees as requested or assigned.

18. Participates in the training of Wexford/facility personnel on medical health as required per NCCHC and ACA standards, as applicable.

19. Respects dignity and confidentiality of patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

The following requirements list the minimum to qualify. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted.

LICENSURE: Current, unrestricted Louisiana Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant license required. Current Louisiana Controlled Substance license. Current DEA license.

CERTIFICATION: Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant certification required. Current CPR Certification

EDUCATION: Graduate of college/university Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant program

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Minimum two (2) years of clinical experience; correctional healthcare experience a plus
