In order to continue to meet pressing health and education needs, the institutions must grow while at the same time working to meet their own and the City and State’s climate and carbon emissions goals. Longwood is also surrounded by Olmsted’s historic Emerald Necklace and contains a number of city parks. Preservation, maintenance, enhancement, and improvement of these open spaces and parkland is essential for Longwood and neighboring communities to grow and thrive.

OverviewThis is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced planner to lead the district’s land use, environment, and open space initiatives. The candidate would join a department of eight planners responsible for planning in Longwood’s Medical and Academic Area and serving our 22 members institutions including several of the nation’s top medical institutions, one of Boston’s most revered museums, Harvard Medical School, Dental School and School of Public Health, the five Colleges of the Fenway, the largest Reform temple in New England, cutting-edge medical research organizations, and a distinguished private high school.

Core ResponsibilitiesSubject Matter Expert (SME) . Serve as Longwood’s SME in two or more of land use, environment, and open space related to policy, plans, legislation, new technologies, grant funding, and other areas.Development Review and Liaison to BPDA and other Agencies . With VP and others, conduct peer review of development projects in and adjacent to the district. This includes tracking projects through the development review process, participating in public meetings, and providing oral and written testimony on topics such as land use, urban design, site planning, and landscape design. Technical support is available from outside consultants as needed.Open Space, Resiliency and Climate Planning . Serve as lead on open space engaging with the City Parks Department, Department of Conservation & Recreation, Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and other groups. With team members and outside consultants, develop district plans such as an open space framework, resiliency, and other related topics.Longwood Sustainability Initiatives . Provide leadership to the Longwood institutions’ sustainability representatives, including convening and facilitating Longwood Sustainability, Green Lab, and Engineers meeting groups. Continue the tradition of identifying and supporting the implementation of new programs to reduce waste, share resources, and advance sustainability goals. With meeting groups, identify pertinent topics and opportunities for knowledge sharing. Facilitate meetings such as best practices seminars with industry experts.Represent Longwood Collective

with local, city, state, regional agencies on planning, open space, climate change, and resiliency policies. Sample topics include BERDO, Zero Net Carbon.

Additional ResponsibilitiesDistrictwide Data Collection and Analysis . Serve as team leader for bi-annual member institution data collection. With support from others, coordinate and potentially lead analysis of aggregate data.Storytelling . Assist in telling the Longwood story using the data and analysis and benchmarks.Supervision of Urban Designer/Planner . Urban Designer/Planner focuses on Longwood’s Placemaking program, Outside// and other tasks, such as GIS.Other Administrative Duties . Including tracking of City policies, projects, and plans; developing weekly Departmental meeting agendas, and supporting the VP for Area Planning & Development.

Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in landscape architecture, urban planning, or related field.Minimum five to seven years of experience including work in an urban environment and managing consultants and staff.Supervisory experience.Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.Excellent analytical, presentation, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to present clear, concise, and timely communications.Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.Professional interpersonal style, ability to interact and work with a diverse range of people.Ability and willingness to proactively research and/or solve issues.Ability to work on several different unrelated tasks at the same time.Ability to work under the pressure of sometimes tight deadlines.Exhibit a ‘can-do’ attitude and flexible work style approach.Ability and willingness to maintain confidentiality at every level.
