The VP Clinical Systems will appreciate the value that comes with an enterprise health information system, the role information technology has in optimizing delivery of care, and the capacity of digital health to address emerging opportunities for Mass General Brigham system growth and improvement. This role will oversee the Mass General Brigham Digital Epic platform, the associated third-party products and applications that are essential for the functioning of this platform, and an increasing number of other enterprise clinical systems, such as the systems serving the unique clinical needs of specialized departments. This role will require managing the Mass General Brigham business relationship with Epic and other clinical system vendors, standardizing technology support of clinical and revenue cycle processes, supporting innovation in clinical care and operations through technology, and leading innovation and transformation for the health system and the patients it serves to derive significant value from the electronic health record and clinical systems.

Mass General Brigham has been live on the Epic EHR for approximately 10 years. The VP Clinical Systems will lead continued optimization of the Epic platform with attention to ensuring stability and scalability of the platform and simplifying and improving the experience for end users. Further, the VP Clinical Systems will lead continued transformation of clinical systems, improving the efficiency of how the Epic EHR platform is managed, becoming more nimble and agile, and continuing to rationalize and consolidate digital clinical systems across Mass General Brigham. The VP Clinical Systems will also support the information systems for pathology, radiology, biomedical device integration, and other enterprise department/specialty clinical systems over time.

The VP Clinical Systems will report to the Mass General Brigham Chief Information Officer (CIO) and be a key member of the CIO's leadership team as well as the Chief Information and Digital Officer (CIDO) Digital Leadership Team (DLT). This role will be the tactical leader for Epic systems clinical and revenue cycle initiatives across the healthcare system. The VP Clinical Systems will coordinate closely with other DLT leaders (Vice Presidents of Research Operations, Enterprise Systems, Digital Patient Experience, Infrastructure, and Data & Analytics) to set the strategy for the Epic platform and ensure Epic support for the experience-led Digital portfolio. This role will partner closely with the VP, Chief Medical Information Officer, who has accountability for clinical informatics and partnering closely with business/clinical leaders on their technology needs.

Core ResponsibilitiesLeads Mass General Brigham Digital efforts to leverage the enterprise electronic health record and Epic Platform to provide clinical and academic leadership for an enterprise information and digital strategy that meets Mass General Brigham goals in the areas of clinical care, revenue capture, patient experience, quality/safety, population health management, research, data/analytics, and teaching.Develop and supervise a multidisciplinary team of Mass General Brigham Digital Epic leaders.Responsible for the activities and performance of the 300+ staff dedicated to Epic and related programs.Responsible for the professional growth and advancement of staff in a range of supporting roles, from Senior Directors to Application Coordinators providing guidance, coaching and mentorship.Serves as a member of the Mass General Brigham Digital Leadership Team, participating in critical strategic and operational decisions.Oversees a leadership team responsible for Epic platform operations and strategic projects as well as other enterprise clinical systems, including Pathology, Radiology, and Biomedical Device Integration.Coordinates across Mass General Brigham seeking enterprise-wide technology solutions when possible.Operational responsibility for non-Epic vendor systems that are critical or essential to the functioning of the Epic system (approx. 60), such as Healthwise patient education materials, First Data Bank drug information, Micromedex drug information, and Intelligent Medical Objects.Participates in the effort to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously and follow through on issues in a timely manner. Applies judgment in setting priorities and proposing more scalable and technologically sound alternatives to requests.Transforms the Epic platform operating model identifying efficiencies and capacity to shift focus from day-to-day support to strategic projects.Ensures strategic support of existing enterprise department clinical systems (i.e., Radiology, Pathology) and builds enterprise teams for additional department systems in partnership with Digital and clinical/operational leadership.Actively manages the business relationship and establishes strategic and partnership vision between Mass General Brigham and Epic Systems (Verona, WI).Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan for benefit realization on the Epic and digital investment to ensure that patients, clinicians, researchers, and educators are maximally supported.

Experience-led Epic PlatformLeads Epic Systems Clinical and Revenue Cycle Applications Teams encompassing the full continuum of care delivery-inpatient and ambulatory settings across all clinical specialties and roles (physicians, nurses, health professionals).Coordinates with the MGB CMIO and Associate Chief Clinical Informatics Officer to manage the clinical content lifecycle to ensure support of clinical processes to improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of care for key clinical populations, conditions, and activities.Coordinates with the VPs of Digital Patient Experience and Enterprise Systems to ensure optimal revenue cycle operations including enterprise strategic priorities related to coding, charge capture, hospital and professional billing.Coordinates with the Chief Technology Officer to oversee the technical vision, strategy, and execution of the Epic platform.Collaborates with VP Data Platforms and VP Data Products to leverage Epic data tools to support the overall enterprise data and analytics strategy.Work with the Digital Project Management Officer on processes for intake and prioritization of work related to the Epic platform and associated complementary systems.Leads the deployment of Epic to new owned and affiliated MGB practices.Provides leadership and architectural oversight for new technology acquisition.Supports legacy Information Systems applications as they relate to the Epic platform and patient care.Ensure integrity of Epic system releases, upgrades, and enhancements delivery.Oversees annual planning, strategic project prioritization and delivery.

Qualifications:An advanced degree (Masters) in healthcare administration, health services research, health policy, information systems, business or other relevant fields is preferred.Minimum of 10-15 years of information systems experience required, with significant experience in a highly complex, academic medical center, medical school teaching hospital, or integrated health care delivery system.Extensive experience leading digital transformation in a healthcare system (particularly with an academic medical center). Includes strong operational and change management experience needed to manage the transition to steady state.Deep experience with the Epic EHR and leading Epic teams, including implementation, stabilization and optimization phases.Epic Certification in at least 1 module preferred.Experience supporting and/or driving large scale, multi-level performance transformations with competing priorities and resource demands.Experience with continuous process improvement and agile methodology.Comprehensive understanding of the opportunities and challenges in deploying and enabling digital health solutions.Sustained track record of successful information technology implementation and service delivery in complex healthcare organizations.Knowledge of and experience with software engineering and the software development life cycle.Ability to work within a highly matrixed organization while focusing on the realization of clinical, research, and financial objectives.Exceptional interpersonal skills, strong executive presence, and strong team management ability.
