The Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History is seeking a dynamic Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our team. As part of the Executive Team, the CFO serves as a strategic partner to the President and CEO, leadership team, and Board of Trustees. The CFO develops a comprehensive and future-oriented financial strategy that supports the Museum’s strategic priorities, manages the accounting and financial functions, and oversees administrative functions for the Museum. The CFO encourages, supports, and exemplifies the highest ethical standards to ensure the smooth operation of the Museum, the professionalism of the staff, the quality of the guest experience, and the continued development of the institution’s administrative processes. Specific Responsibilities:

Finance and Accounting Directs the accounting and related financial activities of the Museum to ensure sound fiscal administration. Responsible for the preparation and integrity of the Museum’s financial statements and related reports and budgets. Recommends appropriate policies and establishes internal control procedures to safeguard the assets of the Museum. Establishes and maintains accounting control over the Museum’s operating, restricted, board-designated, endowment, and quasi-endowment funds. Ensures museum-wide adherence to proper accounting standards. Directs preparation, review, and analysis of financial reports to ensure the Museum’s financial condition is in accordance with the guidelines established by the CEO and the Board. Provides regular financial reports to the Finance Committee and the Board. Provides staff support to the Finance Committee. Ensures that Department Heads have access to timely financial data for decision making. Oversees and prepares annual operating budget with operating plans and financial information prepared by department managers, vetted in discussions and modified as necessary. Implements policies as approved by the Museum’s Investment & Finance Committees and Board. Investments and Cash Management Monitors the investment portfolio. Provides staff support to the Investment Committee and works with the Museum’s Investment Consultants. Directs cash activities to maintain appropriate cash levels. Compliance Provides staff support to the Audit Committee. Directs preparation for the annual audit and other audit activities. Acts as principal liaison with the Museum’s accounting firm in preparing the annual audit. Coordinates issuance of annual audited financial statements and form 990. Manages preparation of tax returns, information returns, and related reports to ensure compliance with governmental reporting requirements. Manages preparation of the financial portion of grant reports and billings to ensure compliance with requirements and policies of funding sources. Ensures that any grants or contracts administered by the division are managed properly. Manages the financial risk management program including: o Works with insurance brokers to select appropriate insurance package and levels of insurance. o Oversees filing of any insurance claims. o Oversees Museum’s contract management. Maintains corporate records and legal files for the Museum including contracts, agreements, policies, and titles. Trains and develops a strong team, preserving high ethical standards and processes. Manages Administration staff to ensure that the Museum’s accounting, finance, payroll and benefits, HR, and IS administration functions are performed effectively. Oversees implementation and application of compensation policy and compensation changes. Oversees employee benefit program including offerings and selection of providers. Approves overall museum-wide employee professional development program. Department Head Assumes responsibility for division operations. Acts as a liaison between staff and others outside the division. Establishes short and long-range goals for the division. Attends and actively participates in department head, division director (management team), board committee, and full board meetings. Drafts division portion of the President & CEO’s report to the Board. Ensures Division activities align and support strategic priorities. Prepares Division budgets, annual reports, and grant and contract proposals. Oversees the acquisition of all supplies and equipment necessary to run the department. Oversees staff instruction on emergency procedures and the use of museum and departmental safety equipment. Authorizes and signs purchase orders for departmental purchases. Delegates any of the above as appropriate and oversees delegated responsibilities. Contributes to a positive guest experience by greeting and addressing any questions when encountering guests as they navigate through the Museum and Sea Center. Supports the Museum’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion for fellow staff, guests, and the community. Minimum Qualifications:

MBA or CPA required. 7+ years of experience in the field of accounting or finance. 5+ years of experience in the supervision and training of staff, both paid and voluntary. Financial expertise, strong technical knowledge, and skills in a range of finance disciplines, a deep understanding of financial operations, and proven talent for the development and execution of a long-term financial strategy. Proven ability to think strategically about complex operational practices in a thoughtful manner and the skill to implement change, when necessary, and establish best practices tailored to the Museum’s unique needs, while building consensus among peers, subordinates, and others throughout the organization. The demonstrated disposition and commitment to cooperation, superb listening and partnering skills, and the ability to cultivate trust and credibility with colleagues. Experience as a fair, respectful leader, as well as a proven ability to manage resources—human, financial, and physical—to maximize productivity and assure the highest quality work. Excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to convey technically complex financial information and concepts in accessible terms, and negotiation skills. A bright, inquisitive, and agile mind, as well as a commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards. An ability to work successfully in a complex and fluid environment demanding self-reliance combined with team spirit, outstanding judgment and people skills, and a sense of humor. Strong working knowledge of computer software including MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Proficiency with accounting software, preferably Financial Edge and Raiser’s Edge. Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated experience with non-profit accounting and/or auditing, or related work. CPA license preferred. Knowledge of nonprofit GAAP preferred. Experience accounting for investments preferred. Experience working at a museum desirable. Interest in the natural world and science. The incumbent must perform each position requirement as outlined in the job description.
