DEPUTY DIRECTOR, MARYLAND STATE ARTS COUNCIL ADMINISTRATOR IV (SPECIAL APPOINTMENT) The Maryland Department of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Deputy Director of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC), within the Division of Marketing, Tourism and the Arts. The Deputy Director serves as a member of MSAC leadership. MSAC is the state agency charged with advancing the arts in our state by providing leadership that champions creative expression, diverse programming, equitable access, lifelong learning, and the arts as a celebrated contributor to the quality of life for all the people of Maryland. The Deputy Director will assist in the implementation and revision of initiatives generated by the Council, Executive Director, and Senior Commerce Administration. The Deputy Director provides management and supervision of assigned programs and associated staff and is responsible for directing data collection including the development, preparation and presentation of reports in response to programming and initiatives. This position oversees the Special Requests Grant Program, and directly supervises the Marketing and Communications Manager, with oversight of all marketing collateral and communications. The Deputy Director also directs all agency professional development activities for both constituents and staff, fielding requests from constituents and staff and supervising the Regional Events Planner in developing, designing, and implementing all professional development activities. The Deputy Director will also serve as a spokesperson and representative for MSAC within state government agencies, corporate, foundation, and educational communities, regionally and nationally within the arts sector. The selected candidate will possess excellent interpersonal skills to work with high level public and private sector officials and maintain effective working relationships; excellent written and oral communication skills; the ability to handle multiple, concurrent and high priority projects and possess proficiency with the Google Suite and/or other relevant software. Substantial statewide travel is required, as is attendance at out of State and National conferences and evening meetings. Candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in arts administration or an arts discipline from an accredited college or university and at least five (5) years of experience in administrative staff or professional work within an arts organization or a public arts agency. Three (3) years of this experience must have involved one or more of the following: supervision of other employees, overseeing and coordinating general operations of a unit, applying rules and regulations, or exercising responsibility for the development of policies or procedures. A Master’s degree in a related area is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable: candidates may substitute additional graduate level education at an accredited college or university at the rate of 30 credit hours on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience; additional experience as defined above can also be substituted on a year for year basis for the required education.
