Field Layout Engineer

for construction projects in the DC area. Candidates must have a passion for team-based planning and problem-solving and be wholeheartedly committed to building strong partnerships to support project goals. Candidates willing to relocate and/or travel are preferred.

Position Summary : As a

Field Layout Engineer , this position will include working with concrete carpenters to layout building locations, foundations, walls, embedded materials, and anchor bolts. This position will ensure that the projects are built to the correct tolerances and the required quality.

Essential Functions

Plans, sets up, and maintains layout control for assigned construction project(s) and identifies unacceptable errors.Establishes building corners and permanent reference points to allow back checks of building location.Verifies existing elevations shown on drawings used on roadways and utilities.Layouts column center lines and wall locations, and verifies that the exterior skin is not encroached by the main structure.Plumbs structural steel frame and checks column alignments.Sets and maintains benchmarks and control lines on each floor for use in layout, and verifies that workers are using proper elevations and control lines.Checks slab for elevation and alignment during concrete pours.Performs as-built surveys to verify correct placement of work and to identify conflicts between items of work (i.e., where concrete slab edge or walls have encroached on the exterior skin), and may help maintain as-built drawings.Assists other project staff in securing certified layout from independent engineering resources to establish monument and baseline control and to verify building corners and roadway entrances.Calculates earth, rock, and concrete quantities accurately.Assists with the coordination of shop drawings with contract drawings, verifies accuracy, and proposes solutions to discrepancies between the drawings.Responsible for care, maintenance, and calibration of engineering equipment.Compiles and maintains project record and as-built documents. Ensures storage protocols are followed.

Work Environment : The majority of work is completed outside at the construction site, and in an office trailer where they will monitor the project and make daily decisions about construction activities. The position is often exposed to sounds and loud noises, such as construction equipment. The job requires wearing protective equipment when on the construction site (hard hats, safety glasses, and high visibility clothing). Temperatures and conditions may vary depending on the weather and seasons.

Expected Hours of Work : Full-time position, occasional extended hours and weekends may apply.

Travel : Minimal travel required, depending on the project, travel to other areas may be required. Majority of travel done during work hours; overnight stays may be required.

Physical Demands : While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to talk, listen, sit, walk, reach, kneel, stoop, crouch, and use hands and fingers to handle or feel and to operate a computer keyboard and phone while maintaining visual acuity. The employee may occasionally be required to lift and/or carry lightweight (under 20 pounds) objects.

Required Education and Experience : Three (3) years of experience in Building Layout and using Total Station.

Preferred Education and Experience :Basic understanding of Trimble and Nikon equipment.Deep understanding of research methodology, data analysis, and estimation metrics.Experience within General Trade Carpentry.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications :Well organized, excellent communication, and negotiation abilities.Strong attention to detail and accuracy.Knowledge of building construction, materials, systems, market conditions, trade practices.Must have conceptual ability to work with minimum information and quickly develop an understanding of the owner and/or architect requirements.Ability to read a Blueprint.Complete knowledge of the estimating documents and the ability to provide accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of the documents.Familiarity with construction project management software.Strong computer knowledge in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Pay: $75,000.00-$100,000.00 per year
