We commit to a balanced, value-centered work environment for meaningful projects, careers and talent.Adolfson & Peterson Construction, one of the nation’s top contractors, is recruiting for an experienced Chief Estimator for our Southwest Region based out of Tempe.This position will lead a division’s estimating activities while ensuring alignment with AP’s strategic goals and mission. Provide detailed conceptual estimates from pre-construction schematic and design documents and detailed construction estimates from construction plan and specifications for large, diverse, and complex projects.Because safety is paramount to AP and embedded into everything we do, all team members are responsible for working safely within our Incident and Injury Free culture.Key Accountabilities of the role include:Take personal responsibility for working safely within an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.Be a champion to support IIF efforts for working safely and building a culture of care and concern within the organization that reinforces the behavioral aspects of working and living safely.Maintain a relationship with safety to hold responsibility for personal safety, the safety of each person in the company, and the IIF performance of the entire workforce.As a leader, consistently communicate and reinforce the tenets of an IIF workplace. Be willing to discuss a personal commitment and desire for all employees to work safely and attain an IIF workplace.As a leader, ensure that processes and procedures that support an IIF culture are maintained and reviewed for continuous improvement.Provide leadership within the Estimating/Pre-Construction department to ensure that projects are timely and achieve quality results.
Coach, mentor, and/or train team members. Ensure team members have the necessary resources and support.Set a positive example to provide a collaborative environment and team member engagement.
Develop strategies for the pursuit and procurement of bid projects fitting within the accepted market segments reflected in AP’s marketing plan based on a solid understanding of the competitive bid market. Provide consultative guidance on constructability, schedule, phasing, and staffing.
Review and evaluate proposed projects to determine whether appropriate to pursue on behalf of AP; collaborate with project management to determine what types of projects to bid, strategies, techniques, etc.; set fiscal targets for each project.Identify major issues and concerns on a project regarding risk/reward situations.Complete accurate budgets based on conceptual drawings and written narratives, including justification for all preliminary square foot and systems estimates.
Ensure estimating services are being delivered in accordance with the standard operating procedures of the organization; lead diverse, large, and complex projects.
Provide leadership and business judgment in all financial and profitability aspects of projects including appointing a job captain and other estimating responsibilities.Oversee bid/budget review to ensure accuracy, feasibility, adherence to best in class qualification usage, and maximization of profit.Review general and specific conditions, pricing, quantity surveys, and take-offs; confirm that production and cost data are captured correctly.Perform conceptual estimating; conduct line item take-offs and research product information.Determine proposal deliverables and timing for the estimator.
Build and facilitate collaborative team processes among project participants while building client loyalty.
Work closely with field supervision, project management, and regional leadership team; provide cost updates throughout the design process.Create and manage the estimating database for all company and market data.
Build and manage subcontractor and supplier relationships; oversee bids and presentations.
Develop strategic alliances with key subcontractors and suppliers.Review and oversee bid day procedures and activities.Assure that all subcontractors are treated in accordance with the program and signed charter between AP and subcontractors.Attend and participate in industry and subcontractor events.
Other duties as assigned.Requirements:History of progressively more responsible leadership experience with a track record of significant organizational contributions including:
Bachelor’s degree in construction management, architecture, engineering, or related field and 10+ years’ experience in pre-construction and estimating on commercial construction projects; diverse, complex, and large project ($100 million plus) experience strongly preferred. Masters level degree preferred.Additional certifications such as DBIA and LEED AP are preferred.Demonstrated ability to perform difficult and complex estimating activities along with a clear understanding of, and ability to work with, drawings and specifications, project controls, and the ability to implement industry best practices for different types of facilities and industries.Well versed in conceptual estimating/schematic estimating along with the protocols for general contracting process.Strong computer skills including the experience using estimating software, Microsoft Office, bid management, online plan rooms, and database applications. MC 2 experience preferred.
