Department Chair - McKetta Department of Chemical & Bioprocess EngineeringFull-timeSummaryThe position of Department Chair requires an individual who can provide academic and administrative leadership to the department, school, university, and community. They must be committed to excellence in undergraduate engineering education and possess the ability to support faculty in achieving high quality in teaching, service, scholarship, outreach, and engagement. The Department Chair should have a broad understanding of appropriate academic programs and potential future directions of both their respective department, school, and the institution; be flexible, visionary, creative, energetic; and a strategic planner and possess a demonstrated capacity to lead faculty, staff, and the department.
The successful candidate will also hold a Faculty Member rank at a level commensurate with the candidate’s academic credentials and experience. The position of Faculty Member requires an individual who can provide excellence in teaching, is interested in both their students and their subjects. The Faculty Member should want students to excel and take pleasure in their success. Fairness, attention to duty, and desire for self-improvement are expected traits of Trine University Faculty members.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate for Chemical Engineering Department Chair will hold a faculty rank and will be given a half-time teaching release to carry out the duties and responsibilities of a department chair in the Allen School of Engineering and Computing, which include:
Teaching, with a focus on delivering engaging, meaningful, well-designed classroom and laboratory instruction.
Service to their department, school, and university that adds value to their role as academic leaders.
Scholarship and Professional Development that adds value to their role as an academic practitioner.
Resource management which involves identifying departmental resource needs and managing budgets effectively.
Support of Faculty in attaining their teaching, service, and scholarship goals.
Administrative Duties which include overseeing the department and ensuring the effective implementation of personnel and program goals.
The Department Chair should also bring experience with, and commitment to:
developing and/or implementing the department’s strategic plan
inspiring, leading and connecting diverse stakeholders to this strategic plan
developing and improving the chemical engineering curriculum
recruitment, development, and evaluation of faculty and staff
mediating problems between students and faculty
student recruiting, retention, and placement
cultivation of external support including the department’s professional advisory board
effective budget preparation and management
supervise, via regular meetings, all faculty and staff within the department
schedule course offerings and designate instructors
coordinate program assessment plans, and lead department efforts to retain ABET accreditation
oversee department-specific grant proposals and administer grant funds in coordination with the Office of University Development
As a Faculty Member, the Department Chair must also bring experience with, and commitment to:
teaching a half-time faculty load of six (6) semester hours per semester or twelve (12) semester hours per academic year.
delivering engaging, meaningful, well-designed instruction
assessing student competence and performance
assisting students experiencing academic difficulties and deficiencies.
advising prospective and current students regarding course scheduling and curriculum requirements.
service to the school, university, and community
scholarship and professional development activities that add value to their role as an academic practitioner
Education and/or ExperienceThe successful candidate will have an earned doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field by the contract start date.
