Mechanical Engineer II/Senior – Consumables and Accessories

Covaris is a leading supplier of instrumentation and consumables to the Life Sciences, Clinical Diagnostics, and Drug Delivery industries. Covaris products improve pre-analytical sample preparation, enable novel drug formulations, and manage compounds in the drug discovery process.Founded in 1998, Covaris was a privately held technology company until December 2021 at which point Covaris was acquired by New Mountain Capital. We remain a stand-alone company with a mission to expand AFA into new market segments and grow the company – exciting times! Covaris headquarters is in Woburn, MA where our R&D, engineering and MFG is done. The company is built upon its team’s deep knowledge of fields ranging from acoustic physics and mechanical engineering to biophysics and molecular biology. The Covaris technological foundation is based on its proprietary and patented Adaptive Focused Acoustics ™ (AFA) technology. AFA enables a vast array of non-contact, isothermal processes to be developed for use in a broad range of applications in Genomics, Proteomics, Cell Biology and Drug Discovery, and Formulation. Thousands of Covaris Focused-ultrasonicators are used in over 30 countries. Customers include the world’s leading researchers, universities, and pharmaceutical companies.Covaris continues to innovate pre-analytical sample preparation technologies to accelerate the pace of research and drug discovery.SummaryWe are looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong engineering and design background and a focus on plastic part design and consumables. While consumables will be their focus, they will also be involved in advancing our technologies for laboratory instruments based on project and team needs. You will work on new product development as well as sustaining engineering projects in all stages, from concepting to design and manufacturing. The goal is to innovate and excel in the design and manufacture of acoustics-based laboratory instruments and plastic consumables. Our instruments are complex systems with electromechanical, fluidic, thermal, optical, and acoustic sub-systems. Our plastic consumables must be engineered with tight tolerances for high performance in harsh environments. Fabrication methods include machining (for the tightest tolerance parts) to injection molding (for higher volume consumables) based on the functional requirements of the components. We also develop hardware accessories to increase the level of laboratory automation for workflow solutions that include our AFA instruments. You will work with other engineers and scientists to conceive, design, and release consumables and instruments to Manufacturing. Designs should be based on modelling, simulation, and experimental methods. Responsibilities include design, analysis, and testing to ensure products meet functional requirements. You will be working in a collaborative, fast paced environment with cross-functional teams, using rapid prototyping techniques to fail fast and accelerate the design process, incorporating DOE and DFM as appropriate to ensure products can be manufactured and scaled up. This position reports to the Mechanical Engineering Manager.Key ResponsibilitiesWork on cross-functional teams to conceive and design sophisticated ultrasound based instrumentation, HW accessories for laboratory automation, and consumables.Use SolidWorks to design mechanical components and assemblies for instrumentation and HW accessories, as well as plastic consumables for use in AFA instruments.Design production fixtures for HW items, and tooling for high volume consumable.Ensure product design meets all requirements (functional, cost, ergonomic, and material compatibility) through a combination of simulation (FEA, CFD) and experimentation.Create DOEs and test plans and execute them to generate data for design verification.Hold cross-functional design reviews, document designs (including mechanical component and assembly drawings, and product specifications), test plans, verification reports, etc., and other supporting documentation needed to fulfill process and change-order requirements.Manage external vendors to ensure we get good quality reproducible components that meet all design requirements.Ensure plastic components can be manufactured by the desired methods, including vacuum formed parts, urethane castings, injection molded parts, etc., including working closely with external manufacturers and on tooling development.Execute engineering change orders in our eQMS system.Develop prototypes quickly (via 3D printing, in house machining, external rapid prototyping houses, etc.) to fail fast and iterate designs quickly.Prepare reports and presentations for different levels (engineers to executive management).Participate in FMEA and risk assessments, as well as root cause analysis.Ensure designs align with applicable ANSI, ASME and SBS standards.Up to 10% travel to vendors and for trade shows required.Must be able to work in a laboratory setting and lift objects as heavy as 25lbs.This is predominantly an on-site position in Woburn, MA. Occasional remote work is OK with supervisor approval.QualificationsRequired:Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering with 5+ years of industrial experience, or BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering with 3+ years of experience.Note:

As BS in Plastics Engineering w/ classical Mechanical Engineering coursework (e.g., Strength of Materials, Statics & Dynamics, Design, Material Science, Fluid Mechanics, etc.) will be considered.Advanced sketch-based CAD modeling experience PLM / database file management systems.Familiarity with mechanical drawing best practices using ASME & ANSI standards.Knowledge and experience with plastic injection molding, and other forming techniques (casting, thermoforming, extrusion, urethanes).Experience with mid to high volume product design for Manufacturability.Experience with GD&T stack-up analysis for assemblies and interfaces.Experience with Quality Control processes, and familiarity with ISO 9001.Experience with precision machined parts, molded parts, ceramic components, etc.Expertise with Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook.Excellent communication skills – written, verbal, and presentations skills.Proficiency w/ 3D printing and common commercially available printers and techniques.Advanced SolidWorks modeling experience and its PDM file management system.Competency with FEA, CFD and other analysis modules available under SolidWorks.Experience w/ dFMEA, pFMEA, DOE, DFM.Some exposure to biology, biotechnology, biopharma desired.Desired experience with motorized multi-axis motion systems and robotics for SBS plate manipulations and laboratory automation.Experience with development of regulated products, and familiarity with ISO 13485, etc.Strong problem-solving skills – able to break down and solve complex problems, w/ structured problem-solving tools (e.g., A3, Fishbone, 6-step, etc.) when appropriate.Practical knowledge of the mechanical behavior of engineering materials including fabrication processes, plating techniques, etc.
