Adolfson & Peterson Construction, one of the nation’s top contractors, is recruiting for an experienced General Superintendent for our ((Add Region)).
Because safety is paramount to AP and embedded into everything we do, all team members are responsible for working safely within our Incident and Injury Free culture.
The General Superintendent will, in collaboration with the Regional Operations Leader, provide leadership, management, and oversight of assigned projects and/or operational areas. Collaborate with other departments to support project operations.
Key Accountabilities of the role include:
Take personal responsibility for working safely within an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.
Be a champion to support IIF efforts for working safely and building a culture of care and concern within the organization that reinforces the behavioral aspects of working and living safely.
Maintain a relationship with safety to hold responsibility for personal safety, the safety of each person in the company, and the IIF performance of the entire workforce.
As a leader, consistently communicate and reinforce the tenets of an IIF workplace. Be willing to discuss a personal commitment and desire for all employees to work safely and attain an IIF workplace.
As a leader, ensure that processes and procedures that support an IIF culture are maintained and reviewed for continuous improvement.
Lead the Superintendent and trades function. Develop, manage, and retain a best in class field operations department.
Provide leadership in team member attraction and retention initiatives, performance management, and team member development. Provide recommendations for staffing, compensation reviews, and performance goals.
Help create and coordinate execution of career development plans for field and trade staff.
Coach, mentor, and train team members. Ensure that team members have the necessary resources and support.
Create and nurture a collaborative environment and team member engagement.
Resolve team member performance and work site issues.
Help build and maintain a pipeline of qualified applicants and team members.
Provide communication and direction to department team members.
Oversee all assigned projects to ensure successful execution and completion.
Maintain a broad understanding of assigned project specifications and drawings to ensure project constructability, proper staffing, and scheduling.
Oversee and ensure project quality based on AP’s quality management programs. Review and monitor site-specific quality control plans; monitor compliance and performance.
Troubleshoot jobsite challenges and create innovative solutions; document all corrections, changes, and requests.
May manage a complex, high risk project or multiple projects.
Plan and arrange skilled labor to ensure appropriate staffing levels on all assigned job sites.
Understand and support AP’s commitment to Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO).

Schedule and communicate job assignments to proactively meet the needs of each job site.
Respond to individual and project scheduling needs.
Directly impact the future trades talent pool by engaging with training organizations and collaborating with other industry leaders to identify and drive the training needs of the future.
Ensure site-specific safety plans are in place and effective; monitor compliance and performance.
Oversee the implementation and maintenance of AP’s safety program on all projects; this includes overseeing:
all safety requirements are understood by all project team members and trade contractors. on-site safety meetings. review of the trade contractors’ safety program and SDS information in the contractor start-up meeting. the identification and correction of all safety hazards on the jobsite; report all safety incidents to AP safety team members.
Ensure OSHA and Company required safety literature are posted and maintained on all job sites. Understand, lead, and ensure compliance with AP’s expectations around safety, BIM, QA/QC, LEAN, scheduling, and CMaP on assigned projects. Network and collaborate with industry organizations; act as AP’s representative through board and committee involvement and membership (e.g. AGC, ABC, Subcontractors Association). Attend a variety of meetings as assigned: Bid Revue, Project Start-Up, Project Interim, and Project Close-Out meetings. Collaborate with other departments through the pre-construction and planning phases. Provide technical expertise throughout the pre-construction process and participate in the constructability review. Participate in presentations and proposal preparations. Assist in the management of the pre-construction schedule and the estimate. Review all plans and specifications for constructability and construction schedules; advise the project team of issues and deficiencies and propose solutions. Review project schedules with a focus on sequence and activity duration including procurement items. Monitor the punchlist process and closeout procedures with the Project Team to assure a timely project end. Continually work towards procuring future projects based on AP’s strategic plan and building client loyalty. Participate in regional marketing efforts and provide leads for potential future projects. Act as a leader in at least one external industry organization while participating in numerous other groups. Other responsibilities as assigned. Requirements: History of progressively more responsible construction leadership experience and proven results including:
Bachelor’s degree in construction management or related field with 10+ years of construction management experience or high school diploma or equivalent and 14+ years of directly related experience. 4+ years of people management experience required. Demonstrated proficiency with construction management software such as Prolog, MS Project, P6, Phoenix, Asta, or other scheduling software. Proficiency with Excel, AutoCad, and project management software such as Converge or Procore. Solid understanding of building plans and specifications, value engineering, and life cycle costing. Proven results in driving safety initiatives and enforcement. Current or ability to become current with OSHA 30 and company safety requirements.
Ability to travel to project sites and availability to accept long-term out-of-town assignments. Demonstrated integrity and ethical standards. Experience in complex business as an active participant in driving growth and change; demonstrated effectiveness in driving operations and executing plans. Ability to identify talent, create and develop teams, and build trust and engagement. Strong analytical and logic skills with the ability to maintain a high degree of precision on detailed work. Developed skills (written, oral, and listening) to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
