The Department of Epidemiology is one of the seven departments located in the Gillings School of Global Public Health. The department’s primary focus is to the development and application of research methods to understand the patterns and causes of health and disease, and the application of that knowledge to improving the health of populations. We provide strong training in research methods and opportunities for the application of epidemiology to a wide range of health problems through our research.Position Summary:

As a member of the school’s faculty and administration and under the supervision of the Dean, the Department Chair functions as a full professor and coordinates departmental activity with the activities of the School and the University. The department chair plays an important role in shaping and supporting the School’s missions and goals. They must advocate for their departments and Gillings and are an important part of the leadership team for the Gillings School.The Chair should articulate a mission for the department and strategies to optimize that mission in accordance with departmental, school, and university strategic plans. As a leader in a public university, the position must promote success in an environment committed to Inclusive Excellence.Key responsibilities include:Organizing the department effectively to optimize teaching, research, and practice missions.Ensuring proper administrative support for department matters.Leading faculty and staff to achieve excellence and positive results.Recruiting, retaining, and teaching outstanding students.Leading departmental educational programs and curricula.Facilitating a high-quality program of innovative, externally funded research.Facilitating funding from federal and other grants.Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

MD, DrPH, PhD or related in an appropriate field. The candidate must be eligible for appointment to the rank of Professor, have an outstanding record of academic and research accomplishments, and have a commitment to professional and public service, interdisciplinary collaboration, mentoring, and teaching.Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

The candidate should be an innovator with demonstrated operational leadership, communication, and administrative abilities.Special Physical/Mental Requirements:
