DEPARTMENT INFORMATION Job Description Summary: The Watkins’ lab at George Washington University is seeking a Research Scientist familiar with Virology to join our team developing viral vectored vaccines to engender specific immune responses. We are looking for someone driven to learn and grow in a high-paced environment.
The Research Scientist is responsible for planning, conducting and supervising research at a high level, by designing and conducting experiments in a controlled laboratory setting. Using extensive experience and judgment, this role will plan independent research, analyze and interpret data, publish results, represent the university at conferences and meetings, develop new theories and methodologies, and will lead and direct the work of lower level research staff, while transferring technical expertise.
Responsibilities include: Performs recombinant viral technology using adenovirus (Ad), adeno-associated virus (AAV), and/or lentivirus based vectors. Conducts scaling growth/production of recombinant virus. Designs primers and probes for (RT)-qPCR analysis to analyze virus in blood/tissue samples and culturing and quantifying virus. Prepares cytolytic viral assays, live virus stocks, cell culture, ELISA, flow cytometry, and BSL-2 operations.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position. Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a Master’s degree plus 5 years of experience or a PhD plus 2 years of experience in a related discipline to include at least 2 years of research and/or college level teaching in a field basic to the work to be performed. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Preferred Qualifications: Detailed recording keeping and attention to details. Ability to work independently and problem-solve effectively. Efficient time management and organizational skills. Experience in the design, rescue (engineering), and characterization of DNA/RNA viruses or have the background and skills to master it in a short period of time. A strong ability to work with and understand structural and non-structural viral proteins.
