Following the best current data on “what works,” staff at DOP engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism.The Department of Probation is seeking to hire two (2) Agency Attorneys, who will report to the General Counsel to serve as Associate General Counsels. The Associate General Counsels, under direction, with wide latitude for independent judgment and unreviewed action and decision, responsibilities include but are not limited to:Prosecution of difficult violation of probation cases, conduct complex hearings, and appear in Supreme, Criminal, Family Court and the Appellate Division or before administrative tribunals on complex matters.Conduct legal research and provide guidance to Operations personnel in Family and Adult court.Prepare and argue motions, writs, petitions, legal opinions, affidavits and memoranda of law.Review and prepare charging instruments.Conduct difficult and involved negotiations on behalf of the Agency.Supervise support and administrative staff in borough offices.Respond to Subpoenas and Freedom of Information Law requests.Act as a liaison with agency executives and other governmental bodies and law enforcement officials.Minimum Qualifications:Admission to the New York State Bar; and either:One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; orSix months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment. In addition to meeting the minimum Qualification Requirements:To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.Preferred Skills:Experience in Criminal lawExperience in Family Court matters, in particular Article 3 casesCourtroom litigation and advocacy experienceExcellent legal writing skills are required. All applicants must submit a writing sample.Outstanding communication skillsStrong legal research skillsStrong computer skills in Microsoft Word and OutlookLegal case management database experiencePublic Service Loan Forgiveness:As a prospective employee of the City of New York, you may be eligible for federal loan forgiveness programs and state repayment assistance programs.
