Institute of Translational Genomic Medicine Position Summary:

Administer and coordinate the technical activities of a scientific or research group in relation to the operation of specialized laboratories. Acts as an advisor to subordinates to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Develops and administers budgets, schedules, and performance requirements. Frequently interacts with other labs and coordinates program activities with responsibility for results in terms of costs, methods, and employees. Serve as an advisor to faculty and lab managers to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Insure Standard Operating Procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. Minimum Qualifications Education: Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline or in the health or physical sciences from a regionally accredited institution. Experience: Minimum of seven years of experience. Must have previous experience managing projects. Experience must include a minimum of three years in a supervisory/managerial role. Excellent communications skills (verbal and written). Job Duties: Administer and coordinate the technical activities, educational programs, and infrastructure related to the operation of the specialized laboratories. Develop and implement Laboratory(s) policies and procedures. Manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures; coordinate with research staff on issues which impact laboratory services. Maintain liaison with investigators, research personnel and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. Maintain quality checks on safety of laboratories, including biohazards and ensure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices. Assist in formulating and implementing the short and long-range goals for the operation of the laboratories; set priorities, assign responsibilities, and establish timetables. Plan and schedule work for the group to ensure proper distribution of assignments as well as adequate manning, space, and facilities for subsequent performance of duties. Evaluate and recommend new techniques and technologies. Install and maintain laboratory equipment in compliance with federal regulations. Prepare technical reports reflecting volume of work, procedures utilized and test results; coordinate the preparation of reports and analyses setting forth progress, adverse trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions. Plan and conduct meetings with subordinates to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards. Represent the department/laboratory in interactions with other departments. Assure that the laboratory technicians are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and equipment specific requirements. Assist in the determination of fiscal requirements and in the preparation of budgetary recommendations. Develop and implement quality assurance programs relating to calibration and maintenance of equipment. Provide guidance as requested regarding hiring, training, promotions, and disciplinary issues for technical personnel. Facilitate facility renovations and new construction project, including review of architectural design and building requirements. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
