The combined arts of the theatre enable students to develop production and performance skills that enrich their lives as well as train them for careers in many related fields. Becoming familiar with the historical and cultural dimensions of theatre provides insight into the arts as well as the intricacies of human behavior. This enhances the student's ability to conceptualize ideas and formulate them into artistic visions. Contemporary thinking about theatre and related arts emphasizes a social consciousness that is the foundation for lives of accomplishment within a pluralistic society. Theatre provides a community-based experience that trains students in the intra and inter-personal skills that help them relate cooperatively to others of diverse ages and backgrounds. Experience in the group process encourages collaboration, communication, and the ability to think critically. Students can apply these competencies to all fields in which creative and interactive skills are factors in success. In this way, the students of Theatre & Dance at Dominguez Hills learn how to prosper in their careers and find meaning in their lives.The PositionThe temporary faculty pool is continuously open, and positions are filled as needed, based on student enrollment and funding. Candidates may need to be available to begin teaching on short notice. The Fall term begins in late August and ends in mid-December; the Spring term begins mid-January and ends in mid-May. Opportunities for teaching during the Summer Sessions may also be available.ResponsibilitiesTeach assigned lower and upper division courses in the department’s curriculum and serve weekly office hours based on assigned teaching unit load. Courses may include Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Tap, Dances of World Cultures, Global Dance Perspectives.QualificationsRequired QualificationsA Bachelor’s degree in the field relevant to the curriculum or related discipline.Prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching.Applicants must have experience in teaching and working with colleagues from diverse ages, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.Preferred QualificationsA Master’s degree or MFA in Dance or related discipline and prior college-level teaching experience and relevant industry experience.Employment RequirementSatisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.Additional InformationInitial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank.
