The Technical Director is the main point of contact for the Scenic Department of Diversionary Theatre for the show(s) assigned and works closely with the Production Manager, Executive Artistic Director and Managing Director in fulfilling all duties and professional expectations. While on contract, the Technical Director maintains the inventory of Scenic tool, hardware, and inventory, and supports communication between the Production Manager, Scenic Designer, and Overhire staff on assigned show(s) at Diversionary.The Technical Director is responsible for making sure the build and load-in schedule is adhered to, and the needs of the scenic designer are met. The Technical Director oversees and executes the construction of all scenic pieces as well as the installation and strike of all scenic pieces. A key team member in maintaining the quality of the Diversionary experience, the Technical Director will also help preserve and keep clean the Scene Shop and Mainstage Theatre.Technical Director Core duties include but are not limited to:Assess and obtain a working knowledge of the script and confer with Play’s Director, the Scenic Designer and the Director of Production.Attend all Production Meetings as scheduled by the Production Manager, where applicable.In conference with Scenic Designer, Charge Artist, and Production Manager, purchase and obtain materials to construct the set within the specified budget limits.In concert with the Director of Production, engage and schedule volunteer and over-hire assistance from qualified individuals for load-in, load-out, build and strike within the budget limit for each production.Build and Oversee the construction of the set in conference with Scenic Designer, Director, Charge Artist, and Production Manager as indicated from the Scenic prelims (including draft of ground plan and set elevations) and Scenic finals (including set elevations, set model, updated ground plan, and paint elevations).Periodically during rehearsals, confer with the Director, Scenic Designer, and Director of Production regarding all Scenic and over-hire elements.Supervise and lead in the installation of the Scenic elements with Scenic Designer, over-hire, and Production Manager, as well as attend Strike of the set on dates set forth by Director of Production.Assist in returning the scenic shop to an organized and tidy condition after construction is finished.Assist in returning the theatre to an organized and tidy condition upon completion of tech.Assist and complete Scenic notes within two days of request via Rehearsal Report, Performance Report, and/or Production Meeting Notes.Turn in all receipts associated with purchases within two weeks of opening night of the production.Contribute to a professional, friendly work environment for guest artists and designers that strengthens Diversionary and the business of theatre entertainment. Remain current on technical advancements in design and production, and evolving best practices in production.
